2018 Preakness Odds with Post Positions
- Quip +2000
- Lone Sailor +3000
- Sporting Chance +4000
- Diamond King +3000
- Good Magic +350
- Tenfold +4000
- Justify -230
- Bravazo +2800
Key Horse: Justify -225
It’s hard to look past the Derby winner. Although Justify’s odds to win the Preakness Stakes are at a low -225, he’s about as close to a lock as any Derby winner to land in the Preakness since American Pharoah in 2015. It’s impossible to go against Justify to win.
But, it’s also impossible to bet on Justify to win at his current odds. That’s why I’ll look for some value in the exacta. The key for this exacta is that I leave Good Magic off the ticket. If I leave Good Magic off the ticket, the exacta should pay handsomely if one of the horses listed below ends up crossing the finish line second.
Horses to Use: Quip, Diamond King, Bravazo
I think Quip’s trainer, Rodolphe Bissett, did the horse a big service by not entering into the Derby and instead running in the Preakness. Quip could be the surprise package at 16 to 1. He won’t beat Justify, but he almost certainly has a shot to beat Good Magic and get into the exacta. He’s a must use bet horse.
Diamond King +2000
Diamond King’s win in the Federico Teseo Stakes, the prep for the Preakness, was much better than many give him credit for. He ran hard throughout the entire race. He also thought he had the race won, which is why he almost lost to Holland Park. Holland Park appears to have some ability. I think he’s got a better shot than his odds indicate to get into the exacta.
The Risen Star winner ran a decent race to just get up for sixth place in the brutal Kentucky Derby on May 5. Bravazo could be coming around to his best. Don’t forget that D. Wayne saddled Oxbow to a win over Orb in the 2013 Preakness Stakes.
