Preakenss Win Pick: Good Magic +350
Good Magic ran a quality second to Justify in the Kentucky Derby. Most believe Justify easily handled Good Magic because he’s the better racehorse. I’m not someone who believes that. The reason Good Magic finished second to Justify is that he’s a short horse.
While Justify peaked in the Kentucky Derby, Good Magic should peak in the Preakness Stakes. The 2-year-old champion hasn’t come close to showing his best this year. The Derby was only his third race this year while it was Justify’s fourth.
I believe Good Magic is sitting on a monster race. It should take a gargantuan effort for Justify to hold off Good Magic on Saturday. This time Justify won’t.
Preakness Place Pick: Justify -230
All racehorses hit the wall. American Pharoah hit the wall in the Travers Stakes. He came back and demolished the field, including Keen Ice who beat him in the Travers, in that year’s Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The Preakness will be Justify’s fifth race this year. That’s a lot of racing before June for any horse. It’s really a lot of racing for a 3-year-old who just won the Kentucky Derby two weeks ago. I don’t see Justify having enough in the tank to beat Good Magic on Saturday.
That doesn’t mean Justify doesn’t beat the rest of his competition outside of Good Magic. It just means that Justify won’t have enough to hold off Good Magic’s late charge.
Preakness Show Pick: Quip +2000
The Tampa Bay Derby winner should be the reason Justify has trouble holding off Good Magic for the Preakness victory. Quip is fast enough to stick with Justify in the early going. He’s also got enough heart to battle Justify to the wire. He should be a big thorn in Justify’s side on May 19. Quip could end up beating Justify for the place slot.
