It’s no surprise that Exaggerator is at 9/5, a bit over even money, in order to win the Belmont Stakes. Since he was sired by Curlin, Exaggerator should have no trouble with the 1 ½ miles of the Belmont. Not only that, but he absolutely dominated the Preakness field and with some luck may have gotten to Nyquist in the Kentucky Derby. He figures to maintain favoritism well until they break from the gate on June 11.

Suddenbreakingnews, the 5th place finisher in the Kentucky Derby, is at 10/1 to win the Belmont. That’s actually surprising considering that Suddenbreakingnews will, like most of the horses in the race, be beholden to the pace. Cherry Wine at 8/1 offers some value. His fast closing kick in the Preakness Stakes will give him a shot in the Belmont if the pace is fast.

At 5/1 is the Todd Pletcher trained Stradivari. Stradivari finished 4th in the Preakness. Although the horse ran well, three things destroyed his chances at winning. First, it was Stradivari’s first race since April 17, over a month ago. Second, it was only Stradivari’s fourth lifetime race. Finally, the horse ran close to a suicidal pace set in the Preakness by Uncle Lino and Nyquist.

Destin presents excellent value at 6/1 to win the Belmont Stakes. Another Todd Pletcher trainee, Destin follows Pletcher’s usual Belmont pattern. Todd P. likes to rest his horses during the Preakness and wait for the Belmont. This worked to perfection in 2013 when Palace Malice won the Belmont Stakes after finishing 12th in the Kentucky Derby that year. Will Destin be another Palace Malice for Pletcher?

Both Brody’s Cause and Lani at 20/1 are closers that will need a lot of luck to out close Exaggerator. Unified won the Peter Pan Stakes at 1 1/8 miles, the local prep for the Belmont, in a very fast time. At +1400, he might be one for horseplayers to consider. Creator at 10/1 probably won’t appreciate the Belmont Stakes distance.
