Kentucky Derby hopeful Carpe Diem (pictured) is no long-shot at 8/1 to win the 141st running of the roses.

Everyone loves an underdog, the longshot. Disney has made an empire out of it and with all eyes on Bob Baffert’s duo who are favored to win the 2015 Kentucky Derby, most people may overlook this years crop of bet-worthy longshots.

For those of you keeping an eye on the 2015 Kentucky Derby betting field you would of noticed a change this morning with the scratch of Stanford, pushing odds on favorite to win the race American Pharoah into the 17th post, a position no horse has ever won from. Be that as it may, the colt, trained by Bob Baffert and jockeyed by Victor Espinoza, is still the popular bet at 5/2.

The 2015 Kentucky Derby Longshots To Bet On

15-Frosted, 15/1 – There’s no way that the winner of the G1 Wood Memorial should be offering 15 to 1 odds to win the Kentucky Derby. Finally, this much ballyhooed horse during the winter put together a decent enough race in order to win a G1. He looked like a winner in the G2 Fountain of Youth before slowing down considerably in the stretch. But in the Wood, he was terrific. If he’s got the lungs for 1 ¼ miles, he should be right there with a shot in the stretch.

19-Upstart, 15/1 – If the steward’s hadn’t unfairly taken him down in the Fountain of Youth and if Materiality hadn’t bumped him in the stretch of the Florida Derby, Upstart would be the second choice on the morning line to win the Kentucky Derby. He would be going into the First Jewel of the Triple Crown on a 3 race win streak. So, 2 bad luck races and his morning line is higher than 12 to 1 odds?  15/1 is a gift on this horse. He should be no better than 10/1 on the morning line.

6-Mubtaahij, 20/1 – The UAE Derby winner’s off odds might drop significantly from the morning line. The horse looked absolutely stunning when winning the UAE Derby by 8 lengths. Since he’s sired by Dubwai, whose sire is Dubai Millenium, this guy should have no problem either with the dirt at Churchill Downs or the 1 ¼ mile distance.

12-International Star, 20/1 – He hasn’t run fast enough to win this, but here’s the thing:  he closed into a :48.2 half and 1:13.2 six furlongs in the 1 1/8 mile Louisiana Derby and he still won the race. He’ll get a much better pace set up on Derby Day. He’s going to be flying down the stretch on May 2.

4-Tencendur, 30/1 – In his second race with blinkers, this horse improved significantly in the G1 Wood Memorial when finishing second to Frosted by 2 lengths. He went three-wide on both turns in that. He could improve in the Derby.

9-Bolo, 30/1 – Carla Gaines trains this Temple City sired turf horse that just recently started running over the dirt. He looked uninterested in the Santa Anita Derby, but he ran fast enough in the San Felipe to be an outside contender. If anybody can get a horse to become interested again, it’s Gaines.
