The Favorite Pick To Win The 2017 Breeders’ Cup Classic: 5-Gun Runner 9/5
Since finishing second to Arrogate in the Dubai World Cup in March, Gun Runner has been one of the most impressive horses in the world. He’s won three Grade 1 races in a row: The Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs, the Whitney at Saratoga, and the Woodward at Saratoga. Gun Runner has looked about as good as any handicap horse in North America.
But, there are knocks. The first obvious knock is that he’s the morning line favorite. It’s tough to win a quality race like the Breeders’ Cup Classic as the morning line favorite. It hasn’t been done often. The next knock is that for all his magnificent races, Gun Runner has never won at 1 ¼ miles. That’s the Breeders’ Cup Classic distance. I expect Gun Runner to tire badly in the stretch. I like others on top.
The Smart Pick To Win The 2017 Breeders’ Cup: 1-Arrogate 2/1
What’s wrong with Arrogate? Nothing. He didn’t take a hold of the track in his 5th place finish in the San Diego Handicap. No worries. Bob Baffert said he wasn’t cranked up for that race. He was cranked up in the Pacific Classic. He almost ran down Baffert’s other star handicap horse in the Classic, Collected. Arrogate just missed. The P. Classic run is a sign that he almost assuredly takes a step forward on Nov. 4. Hall of fame jockey Mike Smith, as always, rides. Arrogate has a huge chance at 2 to 1 overlaid odds.
The Longshot Pick: 2-War Decree 30/1
Ballydoyle trainer Aidan O’Brien has 2 in here. The one that everyone appears excited about is 15 to 1 shot Churchill. I don’t believe Churchill is bred to like the dirt. War Decree is bred to like the dirt. His sire was Danzig. Danzig is from the Northern Dancer line. War Decree’s broodmare’s sire was Street Cry. Street Cry won the Dubai World Cup over dirt. Street Cry also sired Street Sense who won the Kentucky Derby in 2007.
War Decree has never raced over conventional dirt. I’m giving him a better shot of pulling off the massive upset than his more ballyhooed stablemate Churchill.
