Since 2006 no horse with the exception of Rachel Alexandra in 2009 has won the Preakness Stakes after not having run in the Kentucky Derby. So far, only 4 Kentucky Derby runners are possible for the Preakness Stakes.
The first is American Pharoah. The Kentucky Derby winner came out of his race in fine fashion. He should be ready to roll in the Preakness. Firing Line, the second place finisher, is scheduled to start at Pimlico in the Second of Jewel of the Triple Crown in 2 weeks while Dortmund, the third place finisher, is also expected to make his presence felt. As far as whether or not American Pharoah can win the Preakness Stakes, is another question. The truth is that American Pharoah ran further than either Firing Line or Dortmund since he went wide around both turns. He won rather easily considering that at no time did jockey Victor Espinoza have to really get into American Pharoah with the whip. The Kentucky Derby win was never in question.

American Pharoah’s Kentucky Derby unadjusted time of 2:03 is slow. However, the Beyer Speed Figure, which is still considered the gold standard of speed figures came out at 105. The figure is the same that American Pharoah produced for winning the Arkansas Derby. What it means is that he hasn’t yet reached his true potential as a race horse.
With all of that being written, the last great super horse to run in the Preakness, Fusaichi Pegasus in 2000, was upset by Red Bullet in his Preakness try. Red Bullet skipped the Kentucky Derby to run in the Preakness. That just doesn’t happen nowadays. No other three-year-old on the planet is as talented as American Pharoah. After the Derby this past Saturday, that’s obvious. Not only can American Pharoah repeat in the Preakness Stakes, he should repeat and move onto Belmont with a chance at Triple Crown glory.
