Betting Nyquist To Win The Preakness & Triple CrownJosh Bailey
Most horse racing fans weren’t expecting Nyquist to absolutely dominate his competition on May 7 in the Kentucky Derby. This is especially true since Nyquist was close to an incredibly fast pace in the early stages of the race. Danzing Candy ran the first half mile in around :45. Nyquist dueled with Danzing Candy for the first quarter mile in :22.
It takes an incredibly talented horse to hang on and just finish in the money in the Derby after fractions like that. Nyquist pulled away from his competition. It was an impressive performance. Now the question becomes whether or not Nyquist will win the Preakness and whether or not he will win the Triple Crown.
Should You Bet On Nyquist To Win The 2016 Preakness Stakes?
If trainer Bob Baffert has anything to say about it, the answer is no. Baffert figures to have at least 3 horses in the Preakness Stakes. Cupid, who won the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park earlier this year, has front running speed that’s close to what Danzing Candy provides. Mor Spirit ran a terrible Derby but that won’t prevent Baffert from giving the son of Eskendereya another shot at Pimlico in two weeks. Collected won the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes at Keeneland a couple of weeks ago. He didn’t get enough points to make it into the Derby field. But, he also appears capable of giving Nyquist a fight.
Because Baffert trained American Pharoah to a Triple Crown win in 2015, Baffert has a vested interest at preventing Nyquist from winning the Crown in 2016. As far as Nyquist’s odds at Pimlico in two weeks, forget it. He’ll go off at anywhere from 1 to 2 to Even money. I’ll be very surprised if his odds are above even money to win the Preakness.
The Preakness is Saturday, May 21 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore.
Here are the odds for all of the horses in the field:
- Nyquist: -140

Should You Bet On Nyquist To Win The 2016 Triple Crown?
Will Nyquist Win the Triple Crown?
Yes +250/No -400
The horse racing betting odds on Nyquist to win the Triple Crown are somewhat surprising considering how easily he dispatched of his foes in the Kentucky Derby. Then again, American Pharoah was truly a special horse who had run fast before the Derby and who ran fast after. The Derby was Nyquist’s fastest route race to date.
It’s tough to bet against Nyquist at -400. The horse is undefeated, he’s beaten every single horse by a wide margin, including Exaggerator whom he pummeled in the Breeders Cup Juvenile last year. Plus, his connections were sitting on a Triple Crown with I’ll Have Another in 2012 before that horse got hurt. At +250, Nyquist seems like a fantastic bet. He has this crazy ability to relax either on the lead or right off. It’s impossible to get him into a speed duel. Although he’s not nearly as talented as American Pharoah, he doesn’t face the same competition as Pharoah faced last year.
I think the prudent move is to back Nyquist to win the Triple Crown at +250 right now before the odds plummet after the Preakness Stakes in 2 weeks.
