Early 2015 Belmont Stakes Win-Place-Show PicksJosh Bailey
Welcome to Belmont week and here are my 2015 Belmont Stakes Win-Place-Show picks. The race will be broadcast live this Saturday on NBC and streamed live on NBC Sports Live Extra. Post time is approximately 6:50 p.m. ET. All eyes will be on the 3-year old colt American Pharoah, winner of the Derby and Preakness, he is the latest hope of a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978. For the second straight year — and the third time in four — we have an opportunity to bet on a Triple Crown hopeful to win the 2015 Belmont Stakes. Will Bob Baffert’s impressive yet possibly fatigued colt prevail over the 1.5 mile long run or will he be upset by one of the field’s fresh-legged contenders?

Win: American Pharoah, 4/5
The Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner hasn’t looked like he’s ran two races within 5 weeks. In fact, reports are that he’s been acting the same way that he did when he bounced of the Kentucky Derby before taking home the Preakness. Should you include this 3-year old colt in your 2015 Belmont Win-Place-Show bet?
American Pharoah is easily the best bred horse to go for the Triple Crown since Spectacular Bid in 1979. He should be able to sit right off of the Materiality before making a run around the turn if Todd Pletcher enters Materiality into the race. If Materiality isn’t entered, American Pharoah can take the lead, like he showed in the Preakness and draw off. He’s the horse to back even though the odds will be low.
Place: Mubtaahij, 14/1
His grandsire, Dubai Millenium is so far one of the greatest horses to run in this century. His sire Dubawi was more of a miler, but Mubtaahij looks like a horse that wants more ground. He just didn’t fire in the Kentucky Derby. The works since have been terrific. He’s also been spending a lot of time at Belmont. What it means is that he should be acclimated to his surroundings. His breeding suggests that he won’t have any trouble with the distance, he’ll be bigger and tougher than he was in the Derby. Plus, the odds will be nice. Mubtaahij could fight American Pharoah all the way to the wire.
Show: Frosted, 5/1
Frosted has every right to improve off of his fourth place finish in the Kentucky Derby. The Kiaran McLaughlin trainee was one of the few horses to make up any ground on the Top 3 finishers in the Derby. That puts him in the mix in this for sure. The big question is whether or not he’ll enjoy the distance. Should you pick Frosted for your 2015 Belmont Stakes Win-Place-Show bet? Progeny of Tapit have turned out to be great milers. They don’t often perform well at distances past a mile. Also, there’s a chance that Frosted gets over bet to win, but he should do enough to get the show spot.
