The Odds-On Favorite To Win 2017 Kentucky Derby: Always Dreaming 5-1

On Monday, May 1, trainer Todd Pletcher sent Always Dreaming to the Churchill Downs track in draw reing. Draw reins are used to get a horse to school easier. Some horses are easily excitable before races. Pletcher putting draw reinson  Always Dreaming isn’t a good sign.

Pletcher also said that Always Dreaming has shown more energy at Churchill Downs. Showing energy for a race horse is also wasting energy. I don’t know. The Kentucky Derby might be too much for the favorite to handle on May 6.

The Smart Bet To Win The 2017 Kentucky Derby: Irish War Cry 7-1

The more I study Irish War Cry’s past performances, the more I like him. Yes, he showed nothing in the Fountain of Youth. But, I really think that’s because the horse just didn’t understand what the jockey wanted from him. Not only that, but he was due for a letdown after his smashing win in the Holy Bull. Up to the disappointing loss in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, Irish War Cry was undefeated.

After he won the Wood Memorial, his record went to 4 wins from 5 races. What I really like about this guy is his ability to cruise close to the lead before showing his best. Unlike Always Dreaming, Irish War Cry hasn’t shown any indications that he could end up a mental mess on May 6.

Some speed, like Malagacy and Battalion Runner, have scratched from the race. Irish War Cry could get the perfect set up tracking the front runners.

The Dark Horse Pick To Win The 2017 Kentucky Derby: Battle of Midway 20-1

Fox Hill Farms bought this guy for $410,000 in 2015. He’s not as accomplished as many of his peers. That’s why he’s going off at 20 to 1 to win the Kentucky Derby. His race day odds might be higher. But, he’s got something that the others don’t.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer will saddle Battle of Midway. Affectionately dubbed Uncle Jerry, Hollendorfer has been one of the best trainers in the United States for over 30 years.

Battle of Midway set the pace in the Santa Anita Derby. What a pace it was! He ran the half in :46.2 and the first quarter in 1:10.4. If they leave him alone on the front end, he could steal it. Or, if Hollendorfer has taught him how to rate, he could improve enough to where the garland of roses on May 6.
