2017 Kentucky Derby To Win Pick: Irish War Cry +800

There’s a lot to like about the son of Curlin. Curlin, who finished third in the Kentucky Derby, won the Preakness, and then went on to become one of the greatest racehorses to ever live, has turned into a dynamite sire.

What I love about Irish War Cry is his ability to go as fast as he needs to in the early stages to get an optimum position in races. In the Kentucky Derby, the key to winning isn’t necessarily the pace unless you’re right on the lead, or only a length off. The is get into position early so that you’ll have a clear run to the wire at the top of the stretch while saving ground around the turn. That’s the real key.

Irish War Cry easily won the Wood Memorial by hanging right off Battalion Runner and running right by him when asked. I don’t see why he can’t do the same thing on Derby Day.

2017 Kentucky Derby Place Pick: Classic Empire +400

Classic Empire has enough speed to get an optimum position. But, his best chance at winning the Kentucky Derby is to lay off before making a big run. The problem I have with that is Irish War Cry is going to be tough to run down. So, for now, I’m going with Irish War Cry on top.

That doesn’t mean that Classic Empire can’t win the Kentucky Derby. Based on his resume, he’s the likeliest winner. I’ll use him on top in exotic bets. But, for the win, I’m going with Irish War Cry.

2017 Kentucky Derby Show Pick: Hence +2800

I think Hence has a big shot for a Top 3 placing. His Sunland Derby win was impressive. Yes, he chased a ridiculous :45 half. But, he still found a way to change leads in the stretch and to pull away. He’s trained by Steve Asmussen. Asmussen’s one of the best trainers in the world.

If the pace is fast, could he beat Irish War Cry? I’m not so sure he could. But, he could end up second. He’s definitely worth putting in the show slot. Also, based on some speed ratings, he ran faster than Classic Empire did winning the Arkansas Derby, and Irish War Cry did winning the Wood Memorial. Don’t discount his chances.
