2019 Belmont Betting Favorite: Tacitus 5/2
Although trainer Bill Mott won the Kentucky Derby with Country House, his best three-year-old might be the horse that the stewards moved up to third in the Run for the Roses, Tacitus. Owned by Juddmonte Farms, Tacitus has every right to improve. Not only that, but his sire, Tapit, has already produced 3 Belmont Stakes winners. Creator won in 2016, Tapwrit won in 2017, and Tonalist won in 2014. Tacitus appears to be just as talented as Creator, Tapwrit, and Tonalist. More importantly, he’ll have had plenty of time to get over the brutal trip in the Derby.
Although all signs point to a great Belmont run, taking 5/2 odds on a horse to win a race at 1 ½ miles in his first try is never prudent. Let’s look elsewhere for the early Belmont Stakes smart pick.
2019 Belmont Smart Pick: Global Campaign +1200
Most horseplayers don’t know who Stanley Hough is. Even though Stanley Hough isn’t close to being a household name, he could have the 2019 Belmont Stakes winner in his barn.
Global Campaign has won 4-of-5 races. His only loss was a fifth in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. The horse held off Sir Winston in the Grade 3 Peter Pan in his last.
There are a couple of reasons to consider Global Campaign the smart Belmont Stakes choice. First, he’s a front runner in a race that should lack a ton of upfront speed. Even if Preakness winner War of Will enters, he won’t challenge Global Campaign for the lead.
Second, Global Campaign is bred to relish the 1 ½ mile Belmont Stakes distance. His sire, Curlin, finished second in the Belmont. His grandsire, A.P. Indy, won the Belmont. Right now, Global Campaign is the smart bet to win the Test of Champions.
2019 Belmont Long Shot Pick: Intrepid Heart +1200
He wasn’t comfortable at all in the Peter Pan Stakes. One of the reasons is because he prefers to run much closer to the pace than where he was in the Peter Pan. Just because he flubbed in the prep for the Test of Champions, it doesn’t mean he can’t bounce back with a great effort in the Belmont Stakes.
There’s a lot to like about Intrepid Heart. He’s conditioned by one of the greatest trainers of all time, Todd Pletcher. Pletcher knows how to win the Belmont. He’s done it 3 times. Also, like Tacitus, Intrepid Heart’s sire is Tapit. Like Global Campaign, Intrepid Heart’s grandsire, Touch Gold, won the Belmont Stakes.
This early Belmont odds shot can win the Test of Champions. Right now, Intrepid Heart is the best longshot to back.
