Early Belmont Stakes Odds & Picks

The 2017 Belmont Stakes runs on June 10th, but you can bet on the race now. With no shot at a Triple Crown this year, it is time to take a closer look at which horse can win in Elmont, New York.

What: 2017 Belmont Stakes
When: June 10, 2017
Start Time: 6:48 PM ET
Where: Elmont, New York
Stadium: Belmont Park
Watch: NBC
Stream: NBC Sports Live

A surprise winner put a dagger into the heart of Team Pletcher. Cloud Computing, at 14 to 1, sped past all rivals in the Preakness Stakes to take the win. Derby winner Always Dreaming ended up at the back of the pack. Early Derby favorite, Classic Empire, finished in third.

Currently, Cloud Computing is a big question mark for the Belmont. But, could Team Pletcher bounce back in the Belmont Stakes? Will Classic Empire finally make it to the winner’s circle after two defeats? The Test of Champions at 1 ½ miles is the longest of the three Triple Crown horse races.

The Odds-On Belmont Stakes Betting Favorite: Classic Empire +140

He ran too well to lose the Preakness Stakes. Jockey Julien Leparoux might have made too early of a move on Classic Empire. Either that or Cloud Computing got the perfect set up. The Chad Brown trainee got to chase fast fractions as Classic Empire and Always Dreaming put on a show in the first half-mile. The 23.61 fraction was much too fast for horses that had just run two weeks ago.

Some believe Classic Empire hasn’t peaked. I’m not so sure. Maybe, the best he can do is what he showed in the Preakness. He gets three weeks of rest. Still, at +140, he’s an awfully tough horse to back. Horses that skipped the Preakness often win the Belmont Stakes.

2017 Belmont Stakes Sharp Pick:  Tapwrit +800

Like so many other horses in the Kentucky Derby, Tapwrit had no shot. The fact that he finished sixth is telling. He almost had as much trouble in the Kentucky Derby as Classic Empire. He couldn’t get to the rail, the way that Always Dreaming and Lookin At Lee did. But, the real reason to like Tapwrit is that this move, skipping the Preakness and waiting for the Belmont, is what Todd Pletcher usually does with his three-year-olds.

Pletcher was forced to run Always Dreaming in the Preakness. I think Tapwrit has a huge shot of winning Pletcher another Belmont Stakes.

The 2017 Belmont Stakes Darkhorse Pick:  Patch +1500

The horse with one eye, another Todd Pletcher trainee, finished fourteenth in the Kentucky Derby. He broke from post position 20, right on the worst part of the track, had to go back so as not to lose any ground at all, and chased talented horses in front of him that were all over the place. Patch has a ton of talent. He was sired by Union Rags and is out of an A.P. Indy mare, WindyIndy.

Since the Derby was only Patch’s third-lifetime race, there’s room for improvement. The experience, and the 5 weeks off should ensure that improvement. I’m always skeptical of Derby Pletcher runners in the Preakness. I’m never skeptical of Derby Pletcher runners that skipped the Preakness and show up in the Belmont Stakes. I think Todd has a shot of running one-two.
