What Exotic Bets Will Win You Money At The Preakness Stakes?

California Chrome is so dominant that most of his major competitors are pulling out of the Preakness Stakes in order to focus on the faster, wider track at the Belmont Stakes. Pre-derby favorites like Hopportunity, Wicked Strong and Samraat are nowhere to be found. So who can beat California Chrome at the 2014 Preakness Stakes?

Slowly but surely, however, the field is starting to thicken up which means that we have a better idea of how to construct the exotic bets that will win you money at the Preakness Stakes.

There are only about a dozen horses in the race as of this writing, so that means that the menu won’t be as diverse as it usually is when you hit the counter at the virtual track. However, that makes things a little more streamlined. There are five main threats at Pimlico right now.

  6. Ria Antonia, 30-1
  7. Kid Cruz, 20-1
  8. Social Inclusion, 5-1
  9. Pablo Del Monte, 20-1
  10. Ride On Curlin, 10-1

Any trifecta box built around California Chrome and Danza seems to be the most logical way to construct an exotic bet that will win you money at the Preakness Stakes. The question is which other horses to include. For my money, I prefer Ride On Curlin simply because he seemed very interested at the derby and ran a bad route. As long as Curlin stays away from the log jam on the inside, he has a shot at placing well at Pimlico.

Of course, building an exotic bet like feels like the easiest way to win money at the Preakness because it’s founded on three known commodities. Social Inclusion and Bayern did not run at the Derby and pose a tremendous amount of intrigue. People seem very excited about Social Inclusion, but I’m not as enthusiastic.

If you were to shade away from either Danza or Ride On Curlin, then Bayern at +1000 seems like the best horse to back outside of California Chrome. Bob Baffert is a Hall of Fame trainer and Rosie Napravnik will be jockeying as well, and that gives Bayern as much high end training and support as you could as for.

Parlays are a tricky business in any type of sports betting, but boxes offer security like nothing else when it comes to the horse track. California Chrome must be included in any of your exotic bets if you want to win money at the Preakness Stakes, and how many horses you bunch with him is up to you. I would go with Ride On Curlin and a choice between Danza or Bayern.
