My 2014 Expert Belmont Stakes Win Place Show Picks Include California Chrome

Final 2014 Preakness Stakes Picks

I’ve been writing about making 2014 Preakness Stakes picks all week, trying my best to make cases for all of the other horses not named California Chrome. None of my efforts seem to be working and that’s fine because there’s no reason to bet against the favorite at Pimlico this weekend. California Chrome has dropped to a -180 favorite and should be involved in all of your bet slips to win, or any of your boxes.

Preakness Stakes
The 139th running of the Preakness Stakes has California Chrome as a 3/5 betting favorite to win the 2nd leg of the 2014 Triple Crown.
Starts: 05/17/2014 1:00PM
Pimlico Raceway, 5201 Park Heights Ave.

2014 Preakness Stakes Morning Line Odds ordered by post position.

  1. Dynamic Impact, 12-1
  2. General A Rod, 15-1
  3. California Chrome, 3-5
  4. Ring Weekend, 20-1
  5. Bayern, 10-1
  6. Ria Antonia, 30-1
  7. Kid Cruz, 20-1
  8. Social Inclusion, 5-1
  9. Pablo Del Monte, 20-1
  10. Ride On Curlin, 10-1

Comparing Joe Montana to Tom Brady is a cross-generational debate that football fans love having. Doing the same every year with the colts in the Triple Crown is a prize-less pursuit, but it’s worth noting that Chrome has scared off all the big name competition. Almost every major horse has yanked themselves from contention this weekend and is instead preparing for the Belmont since it’s a much easier track to race on.

So when we churn the hyperbole about California Chrome, we should keep in mind that we were as hot and bothered about Orb last year after he won the Kentucky Derby in dominant fashion only to fall up short on the second leg of the Triple Crown. That does give a small window of opportunity for other 2014 Preakness Stakes picks in spite of all the attention the favorite has earned along the way.

The biggest threat to California Chrome is speedster Social Inclusion, who has +350 odds as the second favorite. Behind the two of is Bayern, a 10-to-1 midshot who is definitely worth keeping your eyes on come Saturday. One of the reasons that California Chrome is in trouble is because the field at Pimlico has been thinned out compared to the 20 posts that they had at Churchill Downs. There will be just 10 horses at the 2014 Preakness Stakes.

It says a lot that California Chrome has scared off the best competition and he deserves all the high praise he’s getting. He smashed the stretch at Churchill Downs so the -180 odds aren’t unfair at all. This seems like lazy writing, but the best three horses to box are the top three on the board. Ride On Curlin and Pablo del Monte are my preferred longshots in straight betting if you’re that type of gambler.

As much as I want to convince myself that making 2014 Preakness Stakes picks isn’t academic, I’m coming to the final conclusion that it is. Take California Chrome, Bayern and Social inclusion in that order or as a box if you prefer.
