My 2017 Kentucky Derby Win Pick: Irish War Cry 6/1
His Wood Memorial win was outstanding. After flubbing big time in the Fountain of Youth Stakes, he needed a win to convince his fans that he has what it takes to win on the First Saturday in May.
Tracking a fast pace set by the Todd Pletcher-trained Battalion Runner in the Wood, jockey Rajiv Maragh didn’t ask for Irish War Cry’s best until the 1/8 pole. That’s when he kicked it into gear. Sure, the Aqueduct track that day appeared to favor speed. But, Irish War Cry still relaxed before changing leads and running past Battalion Runner.
It’s difficult for me seeing a horse run him down in the Derby while I have no doubt that he gets the lead in the stretch. That makes him the winner.
My 2017 Kentucky Derby Place Pick: Classic Empire 4/1
Last year’s two-year-old champ is a head case. He refused to train about 20 days ago. Luckily, he did get some work in on April 28. If his head is right, if he isn’t fighting jockey Julien Leparoux throughout the entire race, he could win the Derby by 4 to 5 lengths. He’s that good of a racehorse.
But, I can’t swallow 4 to 1 odds on an equine that may or may not care to run hard. That’s Classic Empire.
My 2017 Kentucky Derby Show Pick: Hence 15/1
Hence hasn’t raced competitively since March 26. Without an April prep, he may not have the bottom needed to run 1 ¼ miles. These are three-year-olds. Not all of them have matured enough to get the distance. Still, it’s hard for me to look past how well he ran to win the Sunland Derby. I think he can pick up the pieces no matter the pace.
He may not do enough to get to either Classic Empire or Irish War Cry. But, I do believe he’s capable of running past Always Dreaming and Battle of Midway as those two tire in the stretch.
Don’t leave him off any of your exotic tickets. If you’re playing saver exotics, make sure he’s in the win and place positions just in case he shows the turn of foot he showed in the Sunland Derby.
