Kentucky Derby Win/Place/Show Picks Before Post Positions Are Drawn

Sometimes the best way to bet the Kentucky Derby is before the draw. Once the draw is made, the odds on the favorites are usually bet down to nothing. This is especially in regards to 2-year old champion Nyquist who won the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile in 2015 and goes into the Derby with a 7 and 0 record.

The problem with betting Nyquist before the draw is that if he gets a bad draw, his odds are likely to stick around 3 to 4 to 1, which is where he’s at in most online sportsbooks. It makes sense to look for other horses in which to bet before the draw, horses that are already going off at overlaid odds and whose odds figure to only drop with a good draw. The three that I like are below.

My Win Bet Pick For The 142nd Kentucky Derby: Destin

He’s run faster than Nyquist at a route of ground. He’s also been training lights out in anticipation for the Kentucky Derby. A 5 furlong move in a minute on April 23 shows that he’s ready to fire his best on May 7. The key will be the layoff. The Derby will be Destin’s first race since he won the Tampa Bay Derby on March 12. That’s an awful long time to sit on the bench. But because he’s trained by Todd Pletcher and because his dad was Giant’s Causeway, I like his chances to be ready for the toughest race of his life.

My Best Show Bet Pick For The 142nd Kentucky Derby: Creator

The Arkansas Derby winner was absolutely brilliant in his prep for the Kentucky Derby. I really like Creator a lot. His odds could definitely go down on Derby Day, meaning that if you like him as much as I do; he’s worth a few bucks in the future book. Creator’s trainer is Steve Asmussen. Asmussen trained Rachel Alexandra and Curlin a few years back. Both of those thoroughbreds won Horse of the Year. Creator’s sire is Tapit, the number one sire in the world. He’s talented enough to win the roses.

My Best Place Bet Pick For The 142nd Kentucky Derby: Mo Tom

After winning the Lecomte by 2.25 lengths, Mo Tom got into all sorts of trouble in both the Risen Star Stakes and the Louisiana Derby. My guess is that every trip handicapper, a handicapper who looks to bet horses that had trouble in previous races hoping that the horse won’t have trouble in the race that they bet, will be all over Mo Tom on Saturday. If they jump on him, his odds are going to drop big time from where they are right now in the sports book. Can he win the Kentucky Derby?  His breeding suggests that his optimal distance won’t be 1 and a quarter miles. But he runs as if he can definitely handle longer. I think Mo Tom has a big chance on May 7.
