The Betting Favorite To Beat Justify At The Belmont: Hofburg +450
The Tapit sired colt lost all shot at getting into the money in the Kentucky Derby after brushing at the start and having to steady twice. He still managed a seventh place finish. The Derby was Hofburg’s fourth lifetime race. It was also at 1 ¼ miles. It was also over a muddy, deep, race track.

The fact that he plopped up and into the Top 10 tells us what a quality animal he is. It must also be noted that Hofburg is trained by Bill Mott. Mott knows Belmont Park about as well as any trainer in the world. Hofburg’s sire, Tapit, produced the last couple of Belmont Stakes winners. It’s hard to go against the second choice to beat Justify on Saturday.
The Smart Pick To Beat Justify At The Belmont: Vino Rosso +850
Here’s another horse who kept trying in the Kentucky Derby even though it was apparent that he had absolutely no shot to get into the Top 4. Vino Rosso had no choice but to go incredibly wide around both turns. He did show some improvement.
The Belmont Stakes should be a much differently run race. Vino Rosso will get a nice stalking trip if that’s what jockey Johnny Velasquez wants. If Johnny V. wants to bring him home from the clouds, he should be able to do that as well. Since the Derby flop, the Todd Pletcher trainee has produced a sensational 4 furlong work at Belmont Park.
He looks primed to beat Justify on June 9.
The Longshot Pick To Beat Justify: Noble Indy +3000
Another trained by Mr. New York, Todd Pletcher, Noble Indy broke from post position 19 in the Kentucky Derby. He’s a speed horse, meaning that his jockey that day, Florent Geroux, had no choice but to take Noble Indy wide. The more Geroux tried to reign in Noble Indy’s speed, the worse it became for the horse. By the second call, Noble Indy was gassed.
He could take the lead in the Belmont Stakes. His breeding suggests 1 ½ miles is within range. If Justify doesn’t go with him, if nobody goes with him, who’s to say he doesn’t wire the field? D’Tara and Commendable were both longshots that wired the Belmont Stakes. Noble Indy could pull off an upset like that.
