Top Preakness Stakes Dark-Horse PicksJosh Bailey
While all eyes are going to be on the big-three Derby front runners this Saturday for the 2015 Preakness Stakes there are a few value bets you can make a trio of Preakness Stakes dark-horses.
Kentucky Derby winner and Triple Crown threat American Pharoah is the odds on favorite to win at 4/5 with stable-mate Dortmund at 7/2. Both Bob Baffert trained horses will break from the first and second post positions, respectively. Firing Line drew into the far more favorable No. 8 post and now the Derby runner-up sits at 4/1 odds.
Bet On These Top Preakness Stakes Dark-Horses
5-Tale of Verve, 30-1
Still a maiden, Tale of Verve was sired by Tale of Ekati. Tale of Ekati won the G1 Wood Memorial in 2008. He finished fourth in the Kentucky Derby that year. Tale of Verve only has a single win to his credit, his maiden score, but that doesn’t mean he has absolutely no shot to win the Preakness Stakes on May 16. The maiden win on April 23 was at the Preakness Stakes distance of 1 3/16 miles.

Tale of Verve could improve enough to beat his competition in the Preakness because most of his rivals, American Pharoah, Dortmund, Firing Line and Danzig Moon, may have fired their best shot on May 2 in the Kentucky Derby. The odds are going to be huge on this maiden winner to upset the favorites on Saturday.
6-Bodhisattva, 20-1 (pictured)
The more you look at Bodhisattva’s running lines, the more it becomes obvious that this son of Student Council has a much better shot at winning the Preakness Stakes than the morning line odds indicate. The Preakness Stakes will be Bodhisattva’s twelfth life time race. That gives the Alan Delacour trainee more experience than any single one of his rivals on May 16. Why is that important? It’s important because even though Bodhisattva has run 11 times already, there’s a chance for improvement. It took the horse 4 races to break his maiden and when he did break his maiden the race was at 1 1/16 miles. Bodhisattva finished fifth in the Remsen and second in the Private Terms Stakes in March before winning the Federico Tesio Stakes in April.

7-Divining Rod, 12-1
Out of all of the new shooters, this is the one that American Pharoah, Dortmund and Firing Line should fear the most. Divining Rod has never finished off the board in 5 lifetime races. He broke his maiden at first asking last November. He finished third in an allowance at Tampa Bay Downs before finishing second in the G3 Sam Davis Stakes. He finished third behind Carpe Diem in the Tampa Bay Derby. He put it all together in the G2 Lexington Stakes in his last. If Divining Rod improves on May 16, he could upset the Preakness favorites.
