Jockey Victor Espinoza rode American Pharoah to victory at Churchill Downs less than two short weeks ago by a single length ahead of Firing Line. Both horses will compete again at the Preakness, joined by Dortmund, American Pharoah’s stable-mate, who finished third at the Derby.
Dortmund showed promise in leading the Derby much of the way, trainer Bob Baffert said after the race.
“The way he was traveling down the backside, I thought maybe he was going to win it,” Baffert said.
“I’m sure he’s going to want a little revenge. [Dortmund] ran a really good race.”

7-Divining Rod, 12-1
After finishing third in the Tampa Bay Derby in March, this Tapit sired, Arnaud Delacour trainee, ran the best race of his life in the G2 Coolmore-Lexington Stakes. Divining Rod tracked the speed before pulling away in the stretch. He won the race easily.
The key for Divining Rod on Saturday will be his ability to stay close and then fire his best shot in the stretch. He’s going to have to improve, but his style, and the way that he finished up in the Lexington Stakes, suggests that he won’t have any issues improving. If he can sit right behind Dortmund and Firing Line, he might be able to get the jump on American Pharoah.
Bodhisattva won the Federico Tesio Stakes, a prep race at Pimlico for the Preakness Stakes, on April 8. He’s going to have to get a lot faster than he was when winning the Federico Tesio, but his heart can’t be questioned. After being headed by Noteworthy Peach around the turn, Bodhisattva came back along the rail to out run that rival. His victory was very Dortmund-like. He’ll also be closer to Dortmund than Divining Rod, Firing Line, or American Pharoah on Saturday. If Dortmund gets an easy lead and Bodhisattva is the only one with a chance to catch him, his backers’ heart rates might go up a few beats. Bodhisattva is a longshot, but he’s not a longshot without some merit.
4-Danzig Moon, 15-1
Danzig Moon (pictured) ran a heck of a race to finish fifth in the Kentucky Derby on May 2. The horse really had no business finishing as well as he did since he was closer to the pace than many of his rivals. If Frosted hadn’t run well enough to get up for fourth, Danzig Moon might have finished off the superfecta. The horse made a terrific move around the turn before flattening out in the stretch. That doesn’t mean that he won’t improve in the Preakness Stakes. Danzig Moon could be a serious contender if the horse learned enough from the Kentucky Derby run to show his best on May 16.
