Who Are The Experts Picking To Win The Belmont Stakes?

The final chapter in the race for the 2015 Triple Crown will be put to a close on Saturday evening after the 147th running of the Belmont Stakes. While the majority of the horse-racing betting experts are picking American Pharoah to win the Belmont, but wasn’t everyone backing California Chrome before last year’s Belmont? Everyone knows what happened then.

Now for the 2nd straight year, a horse the opportunity to make history and win the Triple Crown, a feat that hasn’t been accomplished since Affirmed did it in 1978 (37 years ago). Who are the experts picking to win the 2015 Belmont Stakes? Let’s take a look.

Jay Cronley – ESPN/Tulsa World

  1. American Pharoah
  2. Materiality
  3. Frosted
  4. Madefromlucky

With this year’s Triple Crown lacking early speed, Cronley is riding with American Pharoah to win the 2015 Belmont and thus becoming the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

For Cronley, this will be a two horse race between Pharoah and Materiality with Frosted drawing some early money because he finished ahead of Materiality in the Kentucky Derby, and because gamblers need money.

Mike Curry – America’s Best Racing/FoxSports

Frosted (pictured). Curry of America’s Best Racing and Fox Sports is picking Frosted to cross the 2015 Belmont Stakes finish line first. While he is going on a hunch, Frosted did open as the second favorite at 5-1 to thwart Pharoah’s Triple Crown dreams.

Joe Sullivan – Boston Globe

  1. American Pharoah
  2. Frosted
  3. Mubtaahij

Sullivan from the Boston Globe is picking American Pharoah to win the 2015 Belmont. But will the three of the most famous horse racing run in just over a month tire out the 3-year old colt?

My 2015 Belmont Stakes Expert Win-Place-Show Pick

Win: Frosted, 5/1

Frosted was sensational in the Kentucky Derby. Sure, it’s hard to say that after watching Frosted finish fourth. But the Godolphin runner was the only one that made up any ground on the top three, American Pharoah, Firing Line and Dortmund. Frosted should be able to get a nice stalking trip about 3 to 4 lengths off of the speed. Since this race is at 1 ½ miles, jockey Joel Rosario is going to have plenty of time to get Frosted up for the victory. His breeding makes him suspect, but like everybody’s been saying, “Is there any horse in America that wants to run 1 ½ miles?” The answer to that question is, “Probably not.” Frosted should be in a great position to run by the leaders, including American Pharoah. He’s the pick in a tough Belmont Stakes.

Place: Materiality, 6/1

Todd Pletcher scratched Carpe Diem on Monday this week. He’s still running Materiality. Out of the 2, Materiality is far and away the better horse. Afleet Alex, his sire, won the Belmont Stakes in 2005. The horse should have the lungs to get the distance. Without Carpe Diem there are only 8 other runners in the field. What it means is that Materiality could get an easy lead and just coast to a Belmont victory. American Pharoah might be able to challenge him, but who knows what Espinoza is going to do aboard the champ on Saturday.

Show: American Pharoah, 3/5

American Pharoah is the best horse in the race. He looks like a machine when running since he’s so light on his feet but even machines break down. Is 4/5 good enough odds to expect a horse like American Pharoah to buck history?  Since 1979, 13 horses have tried to win the Triple Crown in Belmont Stakes only to fail. Let’s not forget that the last horse to try to win the Triple Crown was California Chrome in 2014. Chrome’s loss had a lot to do with Victor Espinoza’s ride. Yep, Espinoza is American Pharoah’s jockey. The odds won’t justify his chances to win the Belmont Stakes.
