Who To Bet On To Beat Nyquist At The 2016 Preakness

It won’t be easy for Nyquist to win the Second Jewel of the Triple Crown, the Preakness Stakes, on Saturday, May 21. 10 horses have decided to go after Nyquist and deny him the Triple Crown by beating him in the Second Jewel.

Out of those 10, there are 3 horses that appear well-suited to denying the undefeated colt. Those three horses are Stradivari, Uncle Lino (pictured) and Collected. Keep reading for why I like these 3 to give Nyquist problems in Saturday’s Preakness Stakes.

11 Stradivari at 8/1

The Medaglia D’Oro sired, Todd Pletcher trained three-year-old has improved in each one of his races. Pletcher didn’t run this guy until last November in a $60,000 maiden special weight at Aqueduct. Going off $4.20 to 1, Stradivari didn’t run all that well. But he came back a month later at Gulfstream Park to break his maiden by 11 lengths going 1 1/16 miles. In April, Pletcher entered this guy into a 1 1/8 mile allowance race at Keeneland where he won by a stunning 14 lengths. Jockey John Velasquez geared Stradivari down in the stretch of that allowance win. If he had pushed the talented horse, he may have won by 20. The Preakness Stakes is a step up in class, no doubt. But Stradivari is a serious contender that shouldn’t be taken lightly on May 21.

2 Uncle Lino 20/1

Uncle Lino has a lot going for him in the Preakness Stakes. He’s a front runner who breaks to the inside of Nyquist, meaning that he’ll be able to see what that one is doing since Uncle Lino doesn’t wear blinkers. He also goes into the race off of a lifetime best that proves he has the talent to run against horses like Nyquist. One thing about Uncle Lino is that he might have the style to take down the Derby Champion. Once Nyquist goes up to a horse, that horse usually folds. That won’t be the case with Uncle Lino who is a gutsy, battle-tested, tough guy horse. Uncle Lino ran Danzing Candy into the ground. He grudgingly accepted Mor Spirt running past him after going with Danzing Candy for the first half-mile in :45 in the Santa Anita Derby. He won’t throw in the towel and that might be the way that you beat Nyquist.

7 Collected 10/1

I’m not as impressed with Collected as I am with both Uncle Lino and Stradivari. But any horse trained by Bob Baffert that’s entered into the Preakness Stakes can’t be taken for granted. Baffert has won the Preakness 6 times. He knows what three-year-olds in his barn are capable of taking home the back-eyed susans. Collected goes into this race off of a 2 race win streak. He appears to be getting better with every race. He has a shot to beat the Derby Champ on Saturday.
