2016 MLB NL Pennant Picks At The All-Star Break

The Chicago Cubs started their entire infield in the All-Star Game this Tuesday. The Cubs have been so dominant that they’ve become an incredibly low odds favorite, 3/2, to win the NL Pennant. That’s impressive. I’ve got some thoughts on whether or not the favorites will do it in the National League. I also write about my smart bet to win the NL as well as my longshot play to win the NL.

The Favorite Odds-On To Win The 2016 MLB National League Pennant: Chicago Cubs 3/2

The Cubs are 53-35. That’s an impressive record. The Cubs are ranked second in pitching with a team ERA of 3.33. The bullpen is ranked 14th in MLB with a 3.84 ERA. The Cubs bat .256 as a team. There are a lot of reasons to believe that Chicago should win the National League this season. But there are some question marks. First, the Cubs have struck out 763 times. That’s a high strikeout rate. Second, the Cubs went 2 and 8 in their last 10 games before the All-Star break. Third, Cubs’ ace Jake Arrieta has lost 3 out of his last 4 starts. His ERA is now up to 2.68 after being below 2.00 in late June. At 3/2, I have to pass on betting on the Cubbies to win the NL.

The Smart Bet To Win The 2016 MLB National League Pennant: Washington Nationals 7/2

The Nationals might have what it takes to upset the Cubs in the National League. Washington has the best team ERA in all of baseball at 3.30. What makes the rotation stronger is the fact that the Nats’ bullpen has a 3.11 ERA. That ranks the bullpen 3rd in MLB. Daniel Murphy might be this year’s NL MVP. He has a .348 batting average, he’s hit 17 home runs, and he’s batted in 66 runs. Bryce Harper hasn’t hit his stride yet this season. It’s only a matter of time. I think Washington is a great pick at 7/2 odds.

The Longshot Pick To Win The 2016 MLB National League Pennant: Miami Marlins 20/1

The Marlins are 6 games behind the Nationals in the NL East. Miami doesn’t have as good of a team overall as either Chicago or Washington. What the Marlins do have is a Madison Bumgarner like pitcher in Jose Fernandez. Fernandez has a 2.52 ERA, an 11-4 record and a 1.02 WHIP. The Marlins could get lucky if Wei-Yin Chen and Adam Conley get hot. The Marlins are ranked second in overall batting with a .273 average. The bullpen has a 3.74 ERA. At 20 to 1, Miami is a great looking underdog to win the NL.
