2016 MLB World Series Matchup Picks

October is steam-rolling towards us. The MLB trade deadline is fast approacking. The top-tier teams have are positioning themselves for a World Series title run. One surprise team that has moved its way into World Series contention are the Texas Rangers. The Rangers are now the favorites to win the American League.

A Closer Look At My 2016 MLB World Series Matchup Picks

In the National League, it’s still all about the Chicago Cubs. Are the Rangers and the Cubs a lock as the favored 2016 World Series Matchup?  Are there other teams to consider to match up in the World Series?

The Odds-On Favorite Pick For The 2016 World Series Matchup: Chicago Cubs vs Texas Rangers +1165

Based on ERA, the Cubs have the best starting rotation in baseball. Chicago has a 3.21 ERA as a team. But the Cubbies are only ranked 15th in MLB in hitting with a .254 batting average. The bullpen is ranked 15th as well with a 3.70 ERA.

Texas’ has the 29th out of 30th ranked bullpen in MLB. The only team with a worse bullpen is Cincinnati. The Rangers’ bullpen has a 4.98 ERA. The fact that the Rangers’ starters have a 4.51 ERA means that Texas will have to outscore every team in the American League in order to make it to the World Series. I don’t think that’s going to happen.

The Smart Pick For The 2016 World Series Matchup: San Francisco Giants vs Cleveland Indians +1500

The San Francisco Giants don’t have a better bullpen than the Chicago Cubs. Based on ERA, San Francisco’s bullpen isn’t close. But what the Giants have over the Cubs are 2 World Series winning pitchers in Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto. Those 2 could carry the Giants through to the World Series.

The Cleveland Indians also have a great starting rotation. Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar are as good as it gets. The Indians’ bullpen is ranked 13th in MLB with a 3.67 ERA. That’s not great, but it might be good enough because Kluber, Carrasco and Salazar can all pitch into the later innings.

The Longshot Pick For The 2016 World Series Matchup: Washington Nationals vs Cleveland Indians +2165

The Indians also have decent bats, which is why I like them to be a part of my longshot MLB World Series Matchup. Cleveland averages .260 as a team. Great pitching and decent hitting could put Cleveland into the World Series from the American League.

The Washington Nationals aren’t a team to sneeze at. Sure, the Nats have a tough time against the Los Angeles Dodgers. But other than losing to the Dodgers, the Nats have been very good this season. They have 2 of the best hitters in baseball in Bryce Harper and Daniel Murphy. The starting rotation, led by Stephen Strasburg, is solid. The bullpen is the best in MLB with a 2.87 ERA. The Nationals have a good shot to get to the Fall Classic.
