A Closer Look At Major League Baseball’s Week 16 Best Bets
Los Angeles Angels at Houston Astros
When: Wednesday, July 29th, 2015
The Angels send Garrett Richards to the mound to battle the Houston Astros this Wednesday. Richards has been a solid starter for the Angels in 2015. His ERA is 3.25 while his WHIP is 1.18. Versus the Houston Astros, Richards has been very effective. He’s allowed only 39 hits from 157 at-bats. The ‘Stros have hit 3 homers and batted in 15 runs versus Richards. The team batting average is .248.

Houston’s Lance McCullers has been awesome this season. Lately, the Astros haven’t responded when McCullers has been on the mound. McCullers is 1-1-3 in his last 5 starts. His ERA of 2.60 and WHIP of 1.15 make him an effective pitcher, but unless the Houston batters can get runs for him, McCullers will continue to suffer through no decisions. McCullers has faced Angel batters 23 times. He’s allowed 5 hits for a .217 average. He’s also struck out Mike Trout a couple of times.
The Astros shouldn’t be huge favorites in this matchup. Take the home team with the slight pitching edge. The hope is that the Astros’ bats will wake up.
Los Angeles Angels at Los Angeles Dodgers
When: Friday, July 31st, 2015
On Friday, the Angels battle the L.A. Dodgers in the yearly Freeway Series. Each team’s top pitcher will step onto the mound with the Angels sending in Hector Santiago and the Dodgers sending in Zach Greinke, who owns a 1.37 ERA.

Greinke’s streak of run-less innings came to an end on Sunday in the third inning of a 2 to 3 Dodger loss. The loss also broke Greinke’s 4 game win streak. Zach and the Dodgers are going to be huge favorites over the Angels in this matchup. It’s not warranted. Although Greinke’s been exceptional this season, he’s been terrible versus the Angels during his career. He’s faced the current Angels 110 times. In those 110 at-bats, Greinke’s allowed 41 hits for a .373 average.
Hector Santiago’s 2.43 ERA and 1.15 WHIP aren’t Greinke-like, but they’re not bad. Santiago has faced Dodger batters 24 times. He’s allowed only 5 hits for a .208 average. At times the Dodgers have found it difficult to score runs. That should be the case versus Santiago and the Angels on Friday. Bet on the team from Anaheim.
New York Yankees at Chicago White Sox
When: Sunday, Aug 2nd, 2015
This could be the bet of the week if neither manager changes the rotation before Sunday. Jeff Samardzija for the White Sox has a 3.91 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP. Versus the Yankees he’s only allowed 21 hits for a .233 average. Unfortunately for the White Sox, Samardzija has pitched 9 innings, 7 innings and 8 innings in his last 3 starts. His arm won’t be able to keep it up.

The Yankees’ Masahiro Tanaka has done very well versus the White Sox. From only 26 at at-bats, Tanaka has allowed only 6 hits for a .231 average. Samardzija could pitch well for a while, but the Yankees will knock off enough foul balls to get his pitch count up before the end of the sixth inning. Once this game goes to the bull-pen, the Yankees will win it.
