There are some great pitching matchups this week in MLB. I always like to pick games with tough pitching matchups as my best bets if I can. The reason why is because if it looks like a tough pitching matchup, neither starter will be a bigger favorite over the other. I won’t have to bet on the run line. A Closer Look At My MLB Best Bets Aug 1-7
Miami Marlins at Chicago Cubs
When: Wednesday, August 3 at 2:20pm ET
Listed Pitchers: MIA – Jose Fernandez vs CHIC – John Lackey
Chicago’s John Lackey has been decent at home. His ERA at Wrigley Field is a very good 2.73. His overall WHIP is good as well at 1.09. The Cubs traded for Aroldis Chapman, meaning that if Lackey can keep them in the game, they might be able to beat Jose Fernandez and Miami.
Then again, Chicago has never hit well versus Miami’s young, tough, ace. Fernandez has a 2.79 ERA, a 12 and 5 record, and a 1.05 WHIP this season. The Cubs bat .154 against Fernandez. I think that Miami gets to Lackey early while Fernandez pitches until the 7th or 8th inning. I like the Marlins.
Pick: Miami Marlins
New York Mets at Detroit Tigers
When: Friday, August 5 at 7:10pm ET
Listed Pitchers: NYM – Noah Syndergaard vs DET – Justin Verlander
Syndergaard continues to impress. He’s given up only 2 earned runs in his last 11.2 innings pitched. He’s struck out 16 in those 11.2 innings pitched. Syndergaard has only faced Detroit batters 8 times. He should have the upper hand in this matchup.
Justin Verlander has turned it up a notch. He’s given up only 8 earned runs in his last 42.2 innings pitched. Verlander has been a beast. He pitched 9 innings against Houston on July 30. The Mets have faced Verlander 187 times.
Since the Mets know Verlander, but the Tigers don’t know Sydnergaard, the edge goes to New York and Noah Syndergaard in this matchup. I like the Mets to get it done.
Pick: New York Mets
San Francisco Giants at Washington Nationals
When: Sunday, August 7 at 1:35pm ET
Listed Pitchers: SF – Madison Bumgarner vs WAS – Stephen Strasburg
This is one of the top pitching matchups of the week. Madison Bumgarner has been as consistent as any pitcher in the NL this season. Although his record of 10 and 6 may not be as flashy as a lot of other pitchers, he has a 2.09 ERA and a very good .98 WHIP.
The Nationals bat .262 against Bumgarner. Plus, Washington counters with their ace, Stephen Strasburg. Strasburg’s 2.68 ERA, .99 WHIP and 12-1 record are Cy Young worthy numbers. But Strasburg’s ERA at home is 3.35. What’s worse is that San Francisco bats .284 against Strasburg.
If this pitching duel does take place on Sunday, I’m going with the road team Giants.
Pick: San Francisco Giants.
