MLB Best Bets Sept 11 – 17

There’s still a lot to be decided in Major League Baseball. My best bets this week starts on Wednesday, September 13th.

Will Oakland’s Jharel Cotton find a way to shut down Boston’s terrific offense? There are 2 MLB games on Sunday that I like. In the first, the Cubs host rival St. Louis. Can the Cubbies keep St. Louis from making up ground on them in the NL Central Division? The other game on Sunday that I like has the Dodgers traveling to Washington in what’s guaranteed to be a preview of the NL Playoffs. Who wins in the key game in D.C. on Sunday, Sept. 17?

MLB Best Bets Sept 11 – 17

Oakland at Boston
When:  Wednesday, Sep. 13 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: OAK-Jharel Cotton vs BOS-Doug Fister

Analysis: Boston listed starter Doug Fister has been fantastic in his last 4 starts. He hasn’t yielded a single run while pitching at least 7 innings in all 4. Fister has become one of the more reliable starters for Boston towards the end of the season.

Oakland lists Jharel Cotton as their starter on Wednesday. Cotton’s got a 5.82 ERA. His win-loss record is 7 and 10. His WHIP is 1.48. In his last 2 starts, Cotton has pitched 9 total innings. He’s yielded 11 earned runs off 14 hits. He’s given up 3 home runs in each of his last 2 starts.

Boston by 2 is the play.

Pick: Boston run line

St. Louis at Chicago
When:  Sunday, Sep. 17 at 2:20 pm ET
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
Listed Pitchers: STL-Lance Lynn vs CHIC-Jose Quintana
TV: TBS

Analysis: The Cardinals are only 2.5 games behind the Chicago Cubs as of September 9. Next weekend’s series between the Cards and Cubs could determine who wins the NL Central Division.

For Sunday’s marquee matchup, the St. Louis Cardinals list Lance Lynn as their starter. Lynn’s record is 10 and 7. That’s not great. What is great is that Lynn has a fantastic 2.87 ERA. His WHIP is very good as well. It’s at 1.16.

The Cubbies counter with Jose Quintana. Quintana rediscovered his form in his last start. On Sep. 6, Quintana allowed 0 earned runs off 6 hits in 6 innings. Will Jose be in form this Sunday?

Doubtful. The Cardinals bat .286 against Jose Quintana. I see Lance Lynn and St. Louis taking it to the Cubbies in this one.

I’m going with the Cards.

Pick: St. Louis money line

L.A.  Dodgers at Washington
When:  Sunday, Sep. 17at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: LAD-Kenta Maeda vs WAS-Gio Gonzalez

Analysis: The Dodgers are a mess. When it comes to Kenta Maeda, LAD’s offense hasn’t done much. In fact, the Dodgers have lost 4 out of the last 6 games that Maeda has started.

Without even looking at Gio’s stats, I’m confident that Washington wins this by at least 2 runs. If L.A. couldn’t get anything going against the Arizona Diamondback starters in Maeda’s last couple of starts, they definitely won’t get anything going versus Gio Gonzalez.

I like Washington on the run line.

Pick: Washington run line
