MLB Best Bets Aug 8-14Josh Bailey
We’re quickly approaching September. If Major League Baseball teams are going to make moves to get into the playoffs, they had better do it soon. I’ve chosen 3 games this week that I think could lead to profits in the baseball sportsbook. Who will win on Thursday in a huge matchup between St. Louis and Chicago? Do the Angels have the right guy on the mound to take down Cleveland? How about Kansas City versus Minnesota on Sunday, August 14? Keep reading for answers to those questions and more.
A Closer Look At My MLB Best Bets Aug 8-14
St. Louis at Chicago
When: Thursday, August 11 at 8:05pm ET
Listed Pitchers: STL – Carlos Martinez vs CHIC – John Lester
The Cardinals’ Carlos Martinez has been drubbed in his last 2 starts. Miami took him to town with 4 earned runs from 7 hits in 7 innings pitched. He also walked 4 in that matchup. In his matchup on August 6, Martinez allowed 6 earned runs from 7 hits in only 5 innings to Atlanta. The Braves hit 2 home runs off of him.
Cubs’ batters have always hit Martinez well. Dexter Fowler has a .353 batting average versus Martinez. Jason Heyward has a .375 BA versus Martinez. Addison Russell bats .364 against Carlos. The last time Martinez faced the Cubs, in late May, he gave up 6 earned runs off of 6 hits. I don’t see that changing this Thursday.
Pick: Chicago Cubs
Los Angeles Angels at Cleveland Indians
When: Friday, August 12 at 7:10pm ET
Listed Pitchers: LAA – Tyler Skaggs vs CLE – Corey Kluber
Young Angels’ pitcher Tyler Skaggs has been brilliant in the 3 games that he’s started so far this season. As to be expected, his fortunes have dipped as his starts have gone up. Versus KC on July 26, he gave up only 3 hits. On July 31 against Boston, Skaggs allowed 4 hits and no runs. Then, on August 6 versus Seattle, Skaggs gave up 4 earned runs off of 9 hits in 5.1 inning pitched. That’s 3 games and over 17 innings that the Cleveland Indians have to study on Skaggs. The Indians should have no trouble hitting Skaggs in every inning.
Corey Kluber hasn’t allowed more than 3 earned runs in his last 5 starts going all the way back to July 8. He’s rounding into form for Cleveland. I think Cleveland rolls.
Pick: Cleveland Indians
Kansas City Royals at Minnesota Twins
When: Sunday, August 14 at 2:00pm ET
Listed Pitchers: KC – Edison Volquez vs MINN – Hector Santiago
The Angels’ trading Hector Santiago surprised many. Then again, Santiago’s numbers don’t scream ace. He has a 4.37 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. Santiago has always been great versus the Royals. He allows KC batters to hit .209 against him.
Edison Volquez hasn’t had a great 2016. His ERA is 4.99. His WHIP is 1.46. In away games, Volquez’s ERA is 6.51. It sure looks like the Twins and Santiago have the upper hand in this matchup on Sunday.
Pick: Minnesota Twins
