MLB Best Bets July 24-31

The Chicago Cubs head across town to the home of the Chicago White Sox in a Windy City throw down. Will the Cubs’ Jake Arrieta outduel the White Sox’s James Shields?

My second top game to bet is a battle on Saturday between the Cincinnati Reds and the Miami Marlins. FS1 is set to broadcast the game. Sunday’s top game has rivals San Francisco and the L.A. Dodgers battling at Chavez-Ravine. Keep reading for info on my MLB top games for the week!

MLB Best Bets July 24-31

Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox
When:  Wednesday, July 25 at 8:10 pm ET
Where: Guaranteed Rate Field, Chicago, IL
TV:  ESPN
Listed Pitchers: CHC-Jake Arrieta, CHW-James Shields

Analysis: Jake Arreita’s form appears to be coming around. Versus Baltimore on July 15, Arrieta allowed 1 earned run off 4 hits while pitching 6.2 innings. In his next start, on July 21, he allowed only 2 earned runs off 5 hits in 6 innings.

James Shields hasn’t been nearly as sharp. The KC Royals, Shields’s old team, blasted Big Game James in his last. The Royals punished Shields. In only 4.1 innings pitched, Shields allowed 10 hits and 6 earned runs. One of the hits went for a home run. He walked 3.

It’s hard to see the Cubs losing this game. I’m confident Arrieta throws well while I have no faith that Shields will throw well.

I like the Cubbies on the run line.

Pick: Cubs run line

Cincinnati Reds at Miami Marlins
When:  Saturday, July 29 at 7:10 pm ET
Where: Marlins Field, Miami, FL
TV:  FS1
Listed Pitchers: CIN-Tim Adleman, MIA-Edinson Volquez

Analysis: Why is FS1 broadcasting this game on Saturday? I think it’s because of Miami starter Edinson Volquez. It can’t be because of Cincinnati listed starter Tim Adleman.

Adleman hasn’t been that good this season. His ERA hovers around 5.00 at 4.96. His record is 5-7. His WHIP is 1.37. Adelman is 1-3-1 in his last 5 starts.

Volquez is on the 10-Day DL. I’m not sure when he gets off it. Since Edinson is Miami’s best starter, it goes to reason that the Marlins have a tough time in this Saturday match-up. Even if Volquez can pitch, I’m not sure he’ll be 100%

Adleman has never faced the Marlins. I think that gives him a slight advantage. I’m going with the Reds no matter who shows up on the mound for the Marlins.

Pick: Cincinnati money line

San Francisco Giants at L.A. Dodgers
When:  Sunday, July 30 at 8:14 pm ET
Where: Dodgers Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: SF-Johnny Cueto, LAD-Clayton Kershaw

Analysis: Johnny Cueto versus Clayton Kershaw. Usually, I’d go into each pitcher’s stats at this point. Not in this match up. Kershaw should dominate the San Francisco Giants.

To make matters worse for the G-Men, Cueto allows a ridiculous .272 batting average from the Dodgers. Cueto’s biggest problem all season has been that there’s nobody in SF’s bullpen that can back him up.

I don’t think a reliever shows up this Sunday. I like LAD to win by at least 2 runs.

Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers run line
