Summer is winding down but baseball season is heating up. Playoffs are 5 weeks out and I have a trio of MLB expert picks you can cash in on this week.
MLB Expert Picks August 20-26
Philadelphia at Washington
When: Thursday, Aug. 23 at 1:00 pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
Analysis: Philadelphia’s been much better than Washington this season. The Nationals were favorites to win the World Series. They won’t make the playoffs unless they get on an awesome winning streak.
Philadelphia is the better team, but Washington sends Max Scherzer to the mound. Scherzer has a great .89 WHIP to go along with a fantastic 2.11 ERA. His 16-5 record is also great. The problem Washington might have winning this game, though, is if they pull Max.
Washington is 1-2 in Scherzer’s last 3 starts. That could be a problem on Thursday versus one of the top teams in the National League. I like the Phillies.
Atlanta at Miami
When: Saturday, Aug. 25 at 7:10 pm ET
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, FL
Analysis: Atlanta acquired Kevin Gausman around the end of July. Since then, Gausman has gone 2-1. He’s also thrown 2 sub 2.50 ERA games.
Gausman started versus the Marlins on August 15. He threw 6 innings and gave up 2 earned runs off 4 hits. He struck out 2 and walked 2. If he pitches a similar game, Atlanta should have no trouble beating Miami on Saturday.
Atlanta beat Miami 5-2 in that battle. So, unless the Marlins come up with some great pitching, Atlanta will beat them again.
New York at Baltimore
When: Sunday, August 26 at 8:05 pm ET
Where: Camden Yards, Baltimore, MD
Analysis: Baltimore starter Andrew Cashner looks like a mess. His ERA is 4.71. His WHIP is 1.49. He has a 4-10 record. But, Cashner’s been great in his last couple of starts.
Versus Tampa Bay on August 8, Cashner threw 7 innings and allowed a single earned run off 4 hits. The Orioles beat Tampa Bay 5-4. In his next start on August 14, Cashner pitched 7 innings and allowed 2 earned runs off 5 hits. The O’s beat the Mets 6-3.
Andrew Cashner and Baltimore have a longshot’s chance of upsetting the New York Yankees on Sunday.
