A Closer Look At My MLB Expert Picks July 25-31

Boston Red Sox at Los Angeles Angeles
When: Friday, July 29 at 10:05pm ET
Listed Pitchers: BOS-Rick Porcello vs LAA-Tim Lincecum

Since returning to Major League Baseball, former San Francisco great Tim Lincecum hasn’t had the best of times. Lincecum sits on a 2-3 record. His ERA is 6.59. His WHIP is 2.09. He’s given up 13 earned runs off of 28 hits in his last 14.4 innings pitched.

Rick Porcello is 12-2 with a 3.47 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. He appears to have the upper hand in this matchup on Friday. Porcello won’t have to dominate in order for the Red Sox to win this game if Lincecum does start for the Angels.

Pick: Boston Red Sox

Colorado Rockies at New York Mets
When: Saturday, July 30 at 7:10pm ET
Listed Pitchers: COL-Jorge De La Rosa vs NYM-Noah Syndergaard

Most baseball fans consider Noah Syndergaard the Mets’ ace this season. Matt Harvey is out for the remainder of the season. Jacob DeGrom hasn’t discovered his 2015 form. The ace label in Queens falls on Syndergaard. His 2.43 ERA and 1.10 WHIP aren’t bad. Syndergaard has a .230 ERA at home.

Jorge De La Rosa has gone 1 and 3 in his last 4 starts. He’s given up 26 hits and 14 earned runs in his last 17 innings pitched. Versus NYM, De La Rosa has allowed a .281 batting average from 96 at-bats. I think that the Mets win this matchup by at least 2 runs.

Pick: New York Mets, -1 ½ run line

Seattle Mariners at Chicago Cubs
When: Sunday, July 31 at 8:00pm ET
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers:  SEA-Felix Hernandez vs CHIC-Kyle Hendricks

King Felix’s ERA in away games is 2.89. Still, he hasn’t been as dominant in 2016 as he has been in the past. Felix gave up 5 earned runs from 10 hits in 6.2 inning pitched in his first start on July 20 since an injury kept him on the bench since late May. Baseball bettors have to figure that Felix is going to start pitching better as he hits the mound more. Sunday should be his third start off the injury.

Kyle Hendricks for the Cubs is 7 and 1 when pitching at home. He has an excellent 1.99 ERA in home games this season. Although I think King Felix pitches a great game on July 31, if Hendricks shows up on the mound for the Cubs, it’s hard for me to go against the NL’s top team.

Pick: Chicago Cubs
