MLB Expert Picks May 22-28

Another week in MLB, means another week of great diamond action! My best bets this week start on Thursday, May 25 when Detroit heads to Houston. Do I think Detroit ace Justin Verlander dominates the Astros? Or, will Houston come up big at home?

The Saturday match up I like has the Chicago Cubs tackling the L.A. Dodgers at Chavez-Ravine. Who wins when the two NL pre-season favorites clash on May 27? I’m back to Houston on May 28. Will Houston pitcher Lance McCullers Jr. stop the high-scoring Baltimore Orioles?

MLB Expert Picks May 22th-28th

Detroit at Houston
When:  Thursday, May 25 at 8:10 pm ET
Where: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO
Listed Pitchers: DET – Justin Verlander, HOU – Mike Fiers

Analysis: Verlander remains Detroit’ ace even though he has a 4.39 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP. He pitched well in his last start, a 9 to 3 Tigers’ win over the Texas Rangers. Verlander threw for 7 innings. He allowed 3 earned runs off 4 hits, and struck out 5. Versus the Astros, Verlander hasn’t been bad. The Stros only bat .235 against Verlander. More importantly, he’s allowed Houston to hit only 3 home runs from 115 at-bats.

Verlander certainly appears poised to have a much better game against Houston than Mike Fiers should have versus Detroit. Then again, Fiers allows the Tigers to only bat .225 against him. Not only that, but Houston’s Jose Altuve is 6 of 11, Carlos Correa is 3 of 7, and George Springer is 5 of 10 against the Tigers’ ace.

I like Houston to win this game by at least 2 runs.

Pick: Houston Astros run line (if they’re favored)

Chicago Cubs at L.A. Dodgers
When:  Saturday, May 27 at 7:15 pm ET
Where: Dodgers Stadium, Los Angeles, CA
Listed Pitchers: CHIC – John Lackey, LAD – Hyun-Jin Ryu

Analysis: Which pitcher folds when the Dodgers tackle the Cubs at home on Saturday? Neither listed starter has been great in 2017. The Cubs John Lackey has a 4.35 ERA to go along with a 1.35 WHIP. Hyun-Jin Ryu has a 4.75 ERA to go along with a 1.58 WHIP. Whichever pitcher has his better stuff going should give the edge to his team in this key match up on May 27.

So, whose it going to be, Lackey or Ryu? I like Lackey and the Cubs. Ryu has faced Chicago batters 49 times. They’ve got 14 hits off Ryu. The batting average is a ridiculous .286.
Anthony Rizzo has 3 hits from 9 at-bats. Kyle Schwarber has a hit from 2 at-bats. Even Addison Russell and Javier Baez have hits off Ryu.

Lackey’s experience makes him the better play over the talented but injury prone Hyun-Jin Ryu.

Pick: Chicago Cubs

Baltimore at Houston
When:  Sunday, May 28 at 2:10 pm ET
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
Listed Pitchers: BAL – Ubaldo Jimenez, HOU – Lance McCullers Jr.

Analysis: This is my favorite run line play of the weekend. Baltimore has a terrific offense. The Orioles can put up runs with the best teams in the American League. But, the pitching matchup in this Sunday game favors the Houston Astros by a wide-margin.

Jimenez has a 6.52 ERA. His WHIP is 1.60. The Houston Astros bat .310 against Ubaldo Jimenez. The .310 is legitimate because Jimenez has faced Houston batters a ridiculous 155 times.

Joe Altuve has 6 hits from 19 at-bats. Evan Gattis is 4 out of 8. Josh Reddick is 8 out of 17. Houston should jump all over Ubaldo from the first inning.

Houston rocks the O’s on the run line.

Pick: Houston Astros run line
