MLB Expert Picks Sept 17 – 23
Boston at New York Yankees
When: Wednesday, Sep. 12 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Analysis: Boston and New York battle it out Wednesday with two of the very best pitchers in the American League heading to the mound. Boston lists David Price as their starter. Price has a 3.42 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP. His record is 15-6.
The Yankees counter Price with Luis Severino. Severino’s 3.46 ERA and 1.14 WHIP are comparable to Price’s ERA and WHIP. What isn’t comparable is that Severino holds Boston to a .231 batting average while Price allows the Yankees to bat .318 against him.
I’m backing the Yankees.
Pick: New York Yankees
San Francisco at St. Louis
When: Saturday, Sep. 22 at 1:05 pm ET
Where: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, MO
Analysis: San Francisco doesn’t have much shot of making it to the postseason, but St. Louis could. The Cardinals send former All-Star Adam Wainwright to the mound in hopes of getting closer to that post-season berth. Pitt drilled Wainwright in his last start on Sep. 10. They dominated him with 7 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 innings. Historically, San Francisco’s hit .233 against Wainwright.
The Giants counter Wainwright with a future ace. Starter Dereck Rodriguez is 6-3 with a 2.35 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP. The Giants are 1-5 in Rodriguez’s last 6 starts, though. That leads me to believe the Cardinals take this matchup.
Pick: St. Louis
Boston at Cleveland
When: Sunday, Sep. 23 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Progressive Field, Cleveland, OH
Analysis: Boston battles Cleveland this weekend in what could be a preview of the ALCS. Boston scheduled starter Nathan Eovaldi hasn’t lasted more than 3.2 innings in each of his last couple of starts.
What’s crazy is that even with Eovaldi leaving early, the Red Sox won both games. If the Red Sox can wait out Cleveland pitcher Corey Kluber, they’ll have a shot at winning this game on Sunday as well.
Boston bats .244 versus Kluber. That’s good enough for me to back the Red Sox.
