MLB Expert Picks Sept 3-9

Houston at Boston
When: Saturday, Sep. 8 at 4:05 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
TV: FS1

Analysis: Houston listed starter Gerrit Cole has made the most of switching from the NL to the AL. Cole has a 2.85 ERA to go along with a 12-5 record. He’s faced Boston batters 73 times, yielding 17 hits for a .233 batting average.

Boston counters Cole with pitcher Brian Johnson. Johnson’s ERA is 4.02. His win-loss record is 4-3 while his WHIP is 1.37. Johnson hasn’t pitched more than 5.2 innings in any of his last 3 starts.

But, the Red Sox have won all of Johnson’s last 3 starts. Houston batters have only faced Johnson 13 times. He and the Red Sox could beat the Astros on Saturday.

Pick: Boston

Chicago Cubs at Washington
When: Sunday, Sep. 9 at 1:35 pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
TV: TBS

Analysis: The Nationals haven’t decided who they’ll start versus the Cubs on Sunday, Sep. 9. It might not matter because Cubs’ starter Mike Montgomery, although posting a decent 3.84 ERA, hasn’t gotten the necessary backup.

The Cubs are a terrible 2-6 on the moneyline the last 8 times Montgomery’s gone to the mound. He’s only faced Washington batters 10 times. He struck out 3 Nationals, walked 3 Nationals, and yielded 3 hits.

Washington should be in a great position to beat Mike Montgomery and the Chicago Cubs on Sunday.

Pick: Washington

Houston at Boston
When: Sunday, Sep. 9 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
TV: ESPN

Analysis: Sunday’s Houston at Boston matchup features two of the top starting pitchers in the American League: Dallas Kuechel with Houston and David Price with Boston.

Kuechel’s 10-10 record doesn’t look great. Houston’s gone 7-3 straight up in Kuechel’s last 10 starts, though. Kuechel’s also pitched well versus Boston, allowing 22 hits from 102 at-bats for a .216 batting average.

Price and the Red Sox have been on a tear. Boston’s won 9 straight Davis Price starts. Even if Price has a bad outing, like he did when only lasting 3 innings against Miami on August 29, Boston picks it up.

Boston should beat Houston again on Sunday.

Pick: Boston
