It’s time for this week’s best MLB Free Picks. The first top pick is on Saturday when Philadelphia battles Washington. Can Washington solidify itself as a true challenger to the Chicago Cubs in the NL? My other two best free picks are on Sunday. Will it be Baltimore or Detroit in a major AL battle on Sept. 11? Who will win when the Cubs take on Houston on the road in Sunday’s top interleague matchup?
MLB Expert Picks Sept 5-11
Philadelphia at Washington
When: Saturday, Sept. 10 at 7:05 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: PHI-Jerad Eickhoff vs WAS-Max Scherzer
Analysis: Eickhoff has a losing 9 and 13 record. That’s too bad because his ERA is only 3.86. His WHIP is a decent 1.22. The Nats bat .205 versus Eickhoff in a limited 44 at-bats. Those are excellent numbers.
Washington counters Eickhoff with the terrific Max Scherzer. Scherzer backs up his 2.89 ERA with a fantastic .91 WHIP. Against the Phillies, Scherzer has allowed 4 home runs from 192 at-bats. Scherzer allows the Phillies to bat only .203 against him.
Although Eickhoff could shut down the Nats again, Scherzer should definitely shut down the Philadelphia batters. I like Washington to win this matchup by 2. I’m going Washington on the run line.
Pick: Washington run line
Baltimore at Detroit
When: Sunday, Sept. 11 at 1:10 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: BAL-Chris Tillman vs DET-Daniel Norris
Analysis: Daniel Norris has a 2-2 record with a 3.94 ERA and a 1.51 WHIP. Norris pitched okay in a 6 to 5 Detroit road win over Kansas City in his last start. He allowed 3 earned runs but he pitched through 6 innings. Norris has faced Baltimore batters only 26 times. The Orioles hit .231 against Norris.
Baltimore’s Chris Tillman continues to impress. Tillman is 15-5 with a 3.76 ERA and a 1.27 WHIP. For some reason, Baltimore’s bats come alive when Tillman steps to the mound. The Orioles are 6-3 on the moneyline in Tillman’s last 9 starts.
But, Detroit bats .258 against Chris Tillman. Plus, Tillman goes into this game off of the 15-Day DL. I like Detroit to pull what might be a slight upset win over Baltimore on Sunday.
Chicago Cubs at Houston
When: Sunday, Sept. 11 at 8:00 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: CHIC-Kyle Hendricks vs HOU-Dallas Keuchel
Analysis: The Cubs’ Kyle Hendricks might be that third playoff starter. Hendricks has a 2.07 ERA and a .99 WHIP. Those are excellent numbers. In away games, Hendricks’ ERA is 3.23. That’s excellent.
Houston ace Dallas Keuchel takes the mound against the Cubs on Sunday. Has Keuchel’s form turned around from his early season woes? It hasn’t unless you count Keuchel’s last 2 starts where he didn’t give up more than 2 earned runs in either.
The Cubs haven’t faced Keuchel enough to know how well they will do against him. One thing is for sure, though, and that’s Hendricks’ ability to pitch well on the road. I like the Cubs to get it done on Sept. 11.
Pick: Chicago Cubs
