MLB Free Picks May 16-22Josh Bailey
There are some great series matchups this week in Major League Baseball that you can bet on. Washington battles the New York Mets in a matchup between 2 NL heavyweights. The game on Wednesday made my best bet of the week list.
I also love one of the teams in the Kansas City Royals versus Chicago White Sox battle on Saturday, May 21. You’ll have to keep reading to find out which team I’m backing. My final best bet of the week is in the Chicago Cubs versus San Francisco Giants game on Sunday, May 22.
A Closer Look At My MLB Free Picks May 16-22
Washington Nationals at New York Mets
When: Wednesday, May 18 at 7:00 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: WAS-Gio Gonzalez, NYM-Bartolo Colon
Gonzalez is one of the top ERA guys in the National League. His ERA of 1.93 is daunting. His WHIP of 1.12 isn’t bad either. When it comes to his stats against the Mets, Gio’s been pretty good. He’s held Met batters to a .220 average. They have 37 hits from 177 at-bats versus Gonzalez. Gio’s struck out 41 Met batters while walking 18.
Bartolo Colon had been pitching well until he ran into the Dodgers on May 12. In that game, Colon allowed 5 runs off of 7 hits, 2 of the hits were home runs, in only 5 innings. Colon will look to bounce back versus Washington, a team that he’s allowed to bat .271 against him. It’s hard for me to see Colon having much success against one of the top teams in MLB. I think that Washington takes it.
Kansas City Royals at Chicago White Sox
When: Saturday, May 21 at 2:10 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: KC-Yordano Ventura, CWS-Miguel Gonzalez
Yordano Ventura rediscovered some of his old magic in his last start. He gave up only 3 earned runs to the New York Yankees in a 7 to 3 KC win. Ventura’s ERA is 4.62 while his WHIP is 1.57. Yordano’s been terrific versus the White Sox. He’s allowed 12 hits from 68 at-bats with only one hit being a home run.
Miguel Gonzalez has a 5.17 ERA and a 1.85 WHIP in only 15.2 innings pitched. Gonzalez has pitched well against KC when allowing 17 hits from 75 at-bats. I’m siding with KC and Ventura in this game. Yordano looked great when facing the Yankees in his last. I’ll hope he keeps it going in his first game of the week before taking it to the White Sox on Saturday.
Pick: Kansas City
Chicago Cubs at San Francisco Giants
When: Sunday, May 22 at 8:00 pm ET
Listed Pitchers: CHIC-Kyle Hendricks, SF-Madison Bumgarner
The Cubs have an excellent starting rotation. Kyle Hendricks has sort of been lost in the shuffle since his ERA is only 3.03. His WHIP is only 1.01. That doesn’t compare favorably to Jon Lester and Jake Arrieta. It’s pretty darn good compared to almost everybody else. The Giants have taken Hendricks to the woodshed in limited at-bats. Out of 36 at-bats versus Hendricks, the G-Men have a .306 batting average.
Giants’ ace Madison Bumgarner has been dominant in his last 4 starts. He hasn’t given up more than 2 earned runs in his last 4, all San Francisco wins. Bumgarner has locked down the Cubs. They bat .238 against him. But MadBum is going to be a huge favorite in this game. I’m taking a shot on the Cubs. I think Hendricks can do enough to keep this one under control.
Pick: Chicago Cubs
