MLB Best Bets April 24th-30thJosh Bailey
My top MLB picks to make my best bets list for this week starts on Wednesday when the Yankees head to Fenway to battle rival Boston. Can the Yankees solve the mystery that is the great Chris Sale on April 26? On Saturday, I pick the winner between the Angels and the Texas Rangers. Who takes it at Globe Life Park in Arlington on April 29. My Sunday pick is in a game that could be a harbinger of this year’s World Series. What’s going to happen when the mighty Chicago Cubs throw down against the equally mighty Boston Red Sox?
MLB Best Bets April 24-30
New York Yankees at Boston
When: Wednesday, April 26 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
Listed Pitchers: NYY-Masahiro Tanaka vs BOS-Chris Sale
Analysis: Chris Sale has been terrifying on the mound so far this year. Sale has a .91 ERA. He has a .71 WHIP. He’s struck out 42 batters in 29.2 inning pitched. Versus the Yankees, Sale has been equally fantastic, holding New York to a .200 batting average while striking out 34 of 85 Yankees.
Does Masahiro Tanaka and his Red Sox teammates have any shot versus Boston and Chris Sale on Wednesday?
Maybe. Tanaka has found a rhythm. After racking up a 23.63 ERA in his first game this season, Masahiro has improved with each subsequent start. He was terrific versus the White Sox in his last when he allowed 1 run off 6 hits in 7 innings pitched.
It’s ludicrous to go against Chris Sale, right? But, I’m going to do it. Tanaka needs to pitch well enough before handing it over to the Yankees’ bull-pen. If his mates can get at least 2 runs against Sale, the Yankees can pull off the upset.
Pick: New York Yankees
L.A. Angels at Texas
When: Saturday, April 29 at 7:15 pm ET
Where: Globe Life Park, Arlington, TX
Listed Pitchers: LAA-Ricky Nolasco vs TEX-Yu Darvish
Analysis: This is a terrible matchup for Ricky Nolasco and the Los Angeles Angels. The Rangers have faced Nolasco a total of 89 times. They have 27 hits. 6 of the hits were home runs. Texas averages .303 versus Nolasco.
Darvish can be hot or cold. Versus the Angeles, he’s almost always been hot. L.A. only bats .231 versus Yu, who has faced Angel batters 147 times. Mike Trout does have 4 home runs versus Darvish. Trout’s bat could keep the Angels in this game.
But, at the end, I just don’t see the Rangers’ bats going cold versus Nolasco. I like Texas to beat the Angels by at least 2 runs.
Chicago Cubs at Boston Red Sox
When: Sunday, April 30 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
Listed Pitchers: CHIC-Brett Anderson vs BOS-Rick Porcello
Analysis: Brett Anderson hasn’t lived up to the rest of the Cubs’ rotation. Anderson has a 4.40 ERA and a 1.47 WHIP. He was terrible versus Milwaukee in his last start where he allowed 6 earned runs from 8 hits in 3.2 innings.
Before that, Anderson was money. Is that a sign that Anderson has lost it? I don’t think so. But, even if it is, it may not matter versus Rick Porcello and the Boston Red Sox.
Porcello has a 5.32 ERA and a 1.52 WHIP. Not only that, but the OBP at Boston is .273. What it means is that Anthony Rizzo, Kris Bryant, Ben Zobrist, and Kyle Schwarber could go off this Sunday.
I think the Cubs win.
Pick: Chicago Cubs
