MLB Best Bets Aug 7-13

Baseball is heating up as we barrel towards the stretch drive of the season. Click here for the latest World Series odds & picks.

My first MLB best bet for this week is on Wednesday. Can road team Boston beat back the Tamp Bay Rays at Tropicana Field? Then, on Sunday, I like two games. In the first, Tampa Bay hosts Cleveland. Will Cleveland ace Corey Kluber shut down the TB batting line-up? In the second game, the Boston Red Sox battle the New York Yankees. Who wins when Chris Sale faces off against CC Sabathia and the Yankees?

MLB Best Bets Aug 7th-13th

Boston at Tampa Bay
When:  Wednesday, Aug. 9 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL
TV:  ESPN
Listed Pitchers: BOS-Rick Porcello, TB-Jake Odorizzi

Analysis: There were a couple of games in July where Rick Porcello appeared to have finally gotten it together. On July 8 versus the Rays, Porcello pitched 8 innings. He gave up 6 hits and 1 earned run. Then, on July 16, Porcello pitched 6 innings. He gave up 1 earned run off 9 hits.

Since those 2 performances, Porcello has gone back to an all familiar tune this season: giving up hits and runs every time he steps to the mound.

What happened? I believe the issue with Porcello is mental. Although he pitched great on both July 8 and July 16, Boston managed to lose both games. Boston lost 0 to 1 to Tampa Bay on July 8. On July 16, Boston lost 0 to 3.

I’m just not sure Porcello can get over the fact that his teammates never back him with runs. I like Tampa Bay to win this game on Wednesday.

Pick: Tampa Bay money line

Cleveland at Tampa Bay
When:  Sunday, Aug. 13 at 1:10 pm ET
Where: Tropicana Field, St. Petersburg, FL
TV:  TBS
Listed Pitchers: CLE-Corey Kluber, TB-Austin Pruitt

Analysis: One of my Sunday picks also has Tampa Bay stepping onto the baseball field.  The Rays sent Austin Pruitt to the mound to battle Corey Kluber. Pruitt has a 5.65 ERA and a 1.56 WHIP. Those aren’t great overall stats.

Still, Pruitt might be much more competitive versus Kluber and the Tribe than the betting odds imply. Why? Pruitt should be competitive because in his last start he held the mighty Houston Astros to 0 earned runs off 5 hits in 6.1 innings pitched.

Pruitt walked a single Astros batter in that game.

We know how great Corey Kluber is. I’m taking a chance on Pruitt and the Rays in this battle. The odds are going to be so one-sided that if I get lucky, and Pruitt does beat Cleveland, the reward for the risk should be tremendous.

Pick: Tampa Bay money line

Boston at New York Yankees
When:  Sunday, Aug. 13 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: BOS-Chris Sale, NYY-CC Sabathia

Analysis: Is there a chink in Chris Sale’s armor? In his last start, Sale didn’t look anything like the lockdown pitcher we’ve come to know. He only lasted 5 innings. He allowed 7 earned runs off 8 hits. He struck out 5 and he gave up 2 home runs.

Sale’s much better than that. The question is how he’s going to pitch on Sunday against the New York Yankees.

The Yankees are 3 games behind Boston for the NL East lead. New York can make up ground in this series over the weekend. On Sunday, they start CC Sabathia. CC always seems to get the job done versus Boston.

The last time CC faced the Red Sox he allowed 0 earned runs in 6 innings. NYY beat Boston 3 to 0. Since Sale and the Red Sox figure to be the favorites in this match up, I’m going with CC and the Yankees.

Pick: New York Yankees money line
