Baseball Picks June 5th-11th

My MLB picks for the week of June 5th through June 11th starts on Thursday with arguably the greatest rivalry in all of sports. Can Boston beat the AL East-leading New York Yankees in the Bronx? On Saturday, I find a winner in Angels versus Astros. Who takes it when L.A. heads to Texas to battle Houston? My Sunday game has Boston battling Detroit at home. Can Boston pick itself up after a tough week facing the rival Yankees?

Boston at New York Yankees
When:  Thursday, June 8 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: BOS – David Price vs NYY – Michael Pineda

Analysis: After his first start of the season, I believed Price and Boston were a play against in his second start of the season. He proved me wrong. Price was sensational in his second start off the injury. He pitched 7 innings, yielded a single earned run off 3 hits, and struck out 7. The Red Sox beat Baltimore 5 to 2.

The Yankees counter Price with Michael Pineda. Pineda’s ERA of 3.67 to go along with his 6-3 record and 1.16 ERA are terrific. Versus Boston Pineda hasn’t been overly successful. He’s yielded a .277 batting average to the Red Sox.

But, I have more faith in the Yankees’ bullpen. I’m also not so sure that Price puts together 2 lock down performances in a row. I think the Yankees win this game on Thursday.

Pick: New York Yankees SU

L.A. Angels at Houston
When:  Saturday, June 10 at 4:10 pm ET
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
Listed Pitchers: LAA – Ricky Nolasco vs HOU – Mike Fiers

Analysis: As of Sunday, June 4, Houston is 12.5 games ahead of the L.A. Angels in the AL West. Mike Fiers, Houston’s starter on June 8, hasn’t posted great numbers this season. Fiers has a 4.96 ERA. His WHIP is 1.50.

But, the Stros face Rickey Nolasco, who has a 5.05 ERA and has lost 3 games in a row. Should the Astros dominate Nolasco and the Angels this Saturday?

They probably should. I’m still going with the Angels. The reason is because the last time Nolasco faced the Astros, he dominated them. He pitched 6 innings and yielded 2 runs off 8 hits.

The Angels belted Fiers for 3 home runs off 4 hits the last time he faced them. I like Nolasco’s match up better than Fiers’s on June 10. The Angels bat .299 versus Fiers with 26 hits from 87 at-bats.
I’m going with LAA.

Pick: Los Angeles Angels SU

Detroit at Boston
When:  Sunday, June 11 at 1:35 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, NY
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: DET – Daniel Norris vs BOS – Drew Pomeranz

Analysis: Detroit pitcher Daniel Norris didn’t pitch badly the last time he faced Boston. The game was on April 9. In the battle, Norris pitched 6.1 innings. He yielded 3 runs off 7 hits.

But, that was some time ago. It’s difficult to see Norris doing much on Sunday. I just don’t believe he’s got a shot versus the Boston Red Sox batting l ine-up.

I expect Boston to be better versus Norris on June 11 than they were on April 9. I like the Red Sox to win by at least 2 runs.

Pick:  Boston Red Sox with the runs
