MLB Best Bets May 8 – 14Josh Bailey
Two of the games that make up my best MLB bets for this week will be nationally televised. On Wednesday, ESPN will broadcast the St. Louis at Miami battle. Which team figures to come up in Wednesday’s NL matchup between the Cardinals and Marlins? Then, on Sunday, ESPN shows Houston versus the NY Yankees. What’s going to happen when those two AL division leaders clash? On Saturday, the Dodgers head to Colorado to battle the Rockies. Will L.A. come up big in Denver?
MLB Best Bets May 8th – 14th, 2017
St. Louis at Miami
When: Wednesday May 10 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Marlins Park, Miami, FL
Listed Pitchers: STL – Lance Lynn, MIA – Tom Koehler
Analysis: St. Louis’s Lance Lynn has pitched like the Cardinals’ ace this season. His ERA is a tremendous 2.04 while his WHIP is a very good 1.08. He’s also held Miami in check during his career.
From 83 at-bats, the Marlins only have 17 hits. Giancarlo Stanton is 2 for 12 versus Lynn. Does Miami have any shot in this game on Wednesday?
At first glance, no. Tim Koehler has a 5.40 ERA. His WHIP is 1.50. But, versus St. Louis batters, he’s been great. Koehler allows the Cardinals to bat .214 against him. St. Louis lead-off man Dexter Fowler is an awful 0 for 13 versus Koehler. Matt Carpenter is only 1 for 5 while Yadier Molina is 2 for 8.
I think St. Louis goes into Miami as the favorite. I don’t see the Cardinals leaving with a win. I like the Marlins.
Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado Rockies
When: Saturday May 13 at 8:10 pm ET
Where: Coors Field, Denver, CO
Listed Pitchers: LAD – TBD vs COL – Antonio Senzatela
Analysis: As of May 6, the Rockies have a 2-game lead over the Dodgers in the NL West. The Dodgers haven’t said who will start in place of Hyun-Jin Ryu, whom L.A. placed on the disabled list over the weekend.
It may not matter who starts for the Dodgers in this game. The key is going to be how well L.A. hits against Colorado starter Antonio Senzatela. Colorado should score their 4 to 5 run average. If L.A. can’t keep up, they’re going to lose. So, can L.A. keep up?
It won’t be easy. In 38 innings pitched, Senzatela has a 2.84 ERA, a 4-1 record, 20 strikeouts and a 1.03 WHIP. Dodger batters have never faced Senzatela. That should give him the edge in this battle.
I like Colorado to win by at least 2 runs.
Pick: Colorado run line
Houston at NY Yankees
When: Sunday May 14 at 7:30 pm ET
Where: Yankee Stadium, Bronx, NY
Listed Pitchers: HOU – Charlie Morton vs NYY – Masahiro Tanaka
Analysis: As of May 6, the Yankees are tied with Baltimore atop the AL East Division. Houston has a sweet 4.5 game lead over the L.A. Angels in the AL West.
Charlie Morton’s got a tough matchup versus the Yankees on Sunday. Morton knows a few of the Yankee batters because he regularly faced them while in Pittsburgh. One of those batters, Starlin Castro, is a terrific 12 out of 27 versus Morton. Matt Holiday is 8 of 31. Chase Headley is 3 of 9.
But, Houston bats well versus Masahiro Tanaka. Jose Altuve is 4 of 9. Like Altuve, Carlos Correa is 4 of 9 while George Springer is 2 of 7. I think Altuve, Correa, and Springer do enough for the Astros to win this game.
I’m going with Houston, hopefully, as a nice-priced dog.
