MLB Top Games Aug 14-20

It’s close to desperation time for teams looking to make the MLB Playoffs. On Wednesday, I like a game between one team fighting for the playoffs, and the other with a lot of thinking to do. Will the Yankees beat the NL rival New York Mets on Citi Field? That’s the first game I like this week.

After battling the Mets, the Yankees head to Fenway Park to take on Boston over the weekend. Sunday’s battle between New York and Boston is intriguing. Will it be the Yankees or the Red Sox who win this weekend’s important AL East series? The night game on Sunday has St. Louis at Pittsburgh. St Louis is now only a game behind the Chicago Cubs. Can the Cardinals close in on the rival Cubs?

MLB Top Games Aug 14-20

NY Yankees at NY Mets
When:  Wednesday, Aug. 16 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: Citi Field, New York, NY
TV:  ESPN
Listed Pitchers: NYY-Jamie Garcia, NYM-Seth Lugo

Analysis: This game between the two teams that play in New York should be a decent affair. Mets’ listed pitcher Seth Lugo has a 4.85 ERA and a 1.41 WHIP. But, his record is 5-3. What that means is that his mates usually step it up when he’s on the mound.

The Yankees’ Jamie Garcia has a 4.50 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. Garcia played against the Mets multiple times while a member of the Atlanta Braves. The Mets bat .283 against Garcia. They’ve got 26 hits from 92 at-bats.

But although the Mets have the edge when it comes to starting pitchers, the Yankees have a much bigger edge when it comes to bullpens. I think even if Garcia gets into trouble the Yankees beat the Mets in this game.

Pick: New York Yankees money line

NY Yankees at Boston
When:  Sunday, Aug. 20 at 1:30 pm ET
Where: Fenway Park, Boston, MA
TV:  TBS
Listed Pitchers: NYY-Sonny Gray, BOS-Doug Fister

Analysis: Sonny Gray is 0-2 since coming over to the Yankees from the Oakland Athletics. In both games, it wasn’t really his fault. He only yielded 2 earned runs in both starts. Yet, somehow, the Yankees lost both games.

Gray’s faced Boston batters 88 times. He’s yielded only 19 hits for a .216 batting average. He should have some success this Sunday.

Boston counters Sonny Gray with Doug Fister. Fister has won his last 2 starts. That’s a good sign. Before winning his last 2, he had gone 0-4-1 in his previous 5 starts. If Fister can keep it up, Boston might have a shot against the New York Yankees.

The Yankees bullpen is very good. Too bad it hasn’t helped Sonny Gary yet. I’m not sure it helps Sonny on August. 20. I’m backing the Boston Red Sox.

Pick: Boston Red Sox money line

St. Louis at Pittsburgh
When:  Sunday, Aug. 20 at 7:00 pm ET
Where: PNC Park, Pittsburgh, PA
TV: ESPN
Listed Pitchers: STL-Mike Leake, PIT-Ivan Nova

Analysis: Suddenly, the entire scene in the NL Central Division has changed. Milwaukee is 2 games behind the Cubs. The rival St. Louis Cardinals are only a game behind the Cubs.

St. Louis’ Mike Leake hasn’t given up less than 3 earned runs in his last 3 starts. He only lasted 5 innings versus the KC Royals on August 9. It’s hard to see Leake coming up with one of his better games.

Leake might not have to. The Cardinals bat a ridiculous .378 against Ivan Nova. They’ve got 34 hits from 90 at-bats. 40 of the hits were home runs.

St. Louis all the way.

Pick: St. Louis money line
