MLB Best Bets Aug 21-28Josh Bailey
Major League Baseball heats up this week with a terrific interleague game on Thursday between Washington and Houston. Is the Nationals versus the Astros on August 24th a preview of this year’s World Series? My best bets start on Wednesday when Texas heads to Anaheim to battle the L.A. Angels. Which pitcher steps it up? Andrew Cashner for the Rangers or Andrew Heaney for the hot Angels? I’m back with the Nats on Sunday in ESPN’s nationally broadcast game when Washington takes on the New York Mets. Can the Mets upset the Nats at Nationals Park?
MLB Best Bets Aug 21-28
Texas at L.A. Angels
When: Wednesday, Aug. 23 at 10:00 pm ET
Where: Angel Stadium of Anaheim, Anaheim, CA
Listed Pitchers: TEX – Andrew Cashner vs LAA – Andrew Heaney
Analysis: Although Cashner has a 7 and 9 record, his ERA isn’t bad at all. The 3.31 ERA might qualify for ace status on some teams. Cashner’s very good ERA is tempered by his 1.35 WHIP. He’s faced Angel batters 54 times, yielding only 13 hits. That gives him a shot versus one of the hottest teams in MLB.
The Angels have won 9 out of their last 11. They’re on a 2-game winning streak going into August 21. Their wins haven’t had a lot to do with Andrew Heaney, who has a 9.00 ERA to go along with a 1.40 WHIP.
Heaney’s only start was on 8/18. The Halos lost 7 to 9. I like Texas and Cashner in this match up.
Pick: Texas money line
Washington at Houston
When: Thursday, Aug. 24 at 8:10 pm ET
Where: Minute Maid Park, Houston, TX
Listed Pitchers: WAS – Stephen Strasburg vs HOU – Dallas Kuechel
Analysis: Since 2 aces take the mound in Thursday’s battle between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros, I must say that it’s the more intriguing matchups of the week. Both Stephen Strasburg and Dallas Keuchel must be on their A games for their respective teams to make it all the way to this year’s World Series.
Strasburg pitched 6 innings at Petco Park in his first start back from an injury. He wasn’t bad. He yielded 2 earned runs off 4 hits. He struck out 8.
Keuchel is finally back on track. Against the Oakland Athletics, he pitched 7 innings, gave up only 3 hits, and yielded 0 earned runs. Keuchel has a 1.35 home ERA.
Although I believe Strasburg should pitch well, he won’t pitch well enough. I like Houston by 2 runs in this exciting Thursday game.
Pick: Houston run line
NY Mets at Washington
When: Sunday, Aug. 27 at 8:00 pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
Listed Pitchers: NYM – Tyler Pill vs WAS – Tanner Roark
Analysis: Mets pitcher Tyler Pill has thrown in 7 games this season. He’s only started 3. In the games that he started, he hasn’t thrown well. He also hasn’t thrown well in the games where he’s come in for relief duty.
New York appears to be giving Pill his 15 minutes (more in this case) of fame. It’s doubtful he does enough to stay at the MLB level next season. Because of that, there’s no reason to even bring up Tanner Roark’s stats.
This looks like a throwaway game for both the Mets and the Nats. I’ll take the Nats on the run line.
Pick: Washington run line
