MLB Best Bets May 1 – May 7

Baseball is in full swing. There are a handful of five ⭐  games to bet on starting on Thursday when Arizona heads to Washington. Both teams send their aces to the mound. Who wins out when two of the best pitchers in MLB duel in the nation’s capital on May 4?

Then on May 6, the New York Yankees head to historic Wrigley Field to battle the defending World Series Champions. Will the Cubs take down the Yankees at Wrigley on Saturday? The final game I like is on Sunday, May 7. Who wins what could be yet another pitcher’s duel when Detroit travels to Oakland?

Baseball’s Best Bets for the Week of May 1st – May 7th

Arizona at Washington
When:  Thursday, May 4 at 1:05 pm ET
Where: Nationals Park, Washington, D.C.
Listed Pitchers: AZ – Zack Greinke, WAS – Max Scherzer

Analysis: Zack Greinke is only 2-2 on the season. But, his ERA is strong at 3.19. Versus Washington, Greinke has been quite good allowing only 22 hits, 2 being home runs, from 90 at bats.

Washington’s Max Scherzer has a 2.94 ERA and a .98 WHIP. Scherzer’s allowed 4 home runs to Arizona batters in 96 at-bats. The D’Backs average .219 versus Scherzer. He usually bounces back from a bad game with an excellent effort.

I think he does that this time around. In his last start, Scherzer allowed 5 earned runs off 9 hits in only 6 innings. He figures to be much better against AZ on Thursday.

I like the Nationals to win this battle.

Pick: Washington

NY Yankees at Chicago Cubs
When:  Saturday, May 6 at 7:15 pm ET
Where: Wrigley Field, Chicago, IL
Listed Pitchers: NYY – Jordan Montgomery, CHIC – Brett Anderson

Analysis: The Yankees’ Jordan Montgomery goes to Wrigley Field off 2 straight losses. But, neither loss implies that he pitched badly. In fact, Montgomery only allowed 2 earned runs to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 6 innings on April 23. He did allow 3 earned runs in 5 innings on April 30.

In both games, the Yankees still had a shot. NYY lost 1 to 2 to Pitt. They lost 4 to 7 to Baltimore. Montgomery has a slight edge over the Cubs’ batters in this game because they’ve never seen him.
Chicago starter Brett Anderson has a 3.54 ERA and a 1.57 WHIP. Those aren’t great numbers. But, he’s 2-0. Chicago’s bullpen is so good that they’ve bailed out Anderson once already this season.

They may not need to bail him out versus the Yankees. Although Montgomery may pitch well, he appears to be on an inning limitation. Once the Yankees send in their bullpen pitchers, Chicago should explode for runs.

Pick: Chicago Cubs

Detroit at Oakland
When:  Sunday, May 7 at 4:05 pm ET
Where: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, CA
Listed Pitchers: DET – Justin Verlander vs OAK – Sonny Gray

Analysis: The Tigers have lost 3 straight games where Justin Verlander has started. 2 of the losses were assigned to Verlander, who has a strange 4.60 ERA and 1.40 WHIP this season. Verlander is usually much better than that.

Sonny Gray makes his season debut this Tuesday versus Minnesota. He’s expected to step to the mound on Sunday against Detroit. Gray allows the Tigers to bat .275 versus him. There’s no telling how well he’s going to pitch on Sunday.

I don’t believe it matters. Verlander made a nice mechanical adjustment versus Seattle in his last start. Although Detroit lost 1 to 2, it wasn’t Verlander’s fault. He struck out 8, walked 2, and gave up 1 run in 5 hits in 7 innings pitched.

I like the Tigers to win this one.

Pick: Detroit
