Indianapolis 500 Expert Betting Picks

The Indianapolis 500 takes place this Sunday, May 29. James Hinchcliffe edged out Josef Newgarden to garner the pole earlier in the week. Hinchcliffe starts in position 1 while Newgarden starts right next to him in position 2. All signs point to an amazing race this weekend with a sellout and a local blackout NOT in effect for the first time in 66 years.

Neither Hinchcliffe nor Newgarden are favorites to win the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. Three co-favorites listed at +600 are expected to battle for the top prize. Those drivers are:  Will Power, Simon Pagenaud, and Juan Pablo Montoya. See below for more information on Power, Pagenaud and Montoya as well as my smart bet and longshot bet to win the Indianapolis 500.

The Odds On Favorite To Win The Indy 500: Will Power/Simon Pagenaud/Juan Pablo Montoya +600

It is a three way tie between Will Power, Simon Pagenaud and Juan Pablo Montoya to win the 100th Indianapolis 500 with the price at +600. Let’s take a deeper dive to find out who you should bet on to win.

Will Power’s 2015 campaign was the Australian Power’s best chance to take home the checkered flag at the Indianapolis 500. He just got beat out by teammate Juan Pablo Montoya. Before 2015, Power’s had been known as a better racer on street courses than oval tracks. Power starts in 6th at Indianapolis this Sunday. That should give his backers plenty of confidence.

Simon Pagenaud is the number 1 ranked driver in the 2016 IndyCar Series, he goes into Sunday’s race off of 3 straight wins. He won the Grand Prix of Long Beach on April 17. He won the Grand Prix of Alabama on April 24. He took home the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 14. He should definitely be one of the favorites since he starts at an advantageous position 8th on May 29.

Juan Pablo Montoya is the wiley vertern and one of the all time greats. He returned to the Indianapolis 500 winner’s circle in 2015 after a 15 year absence. He had spent most of those years racing in NASCAR. He, along with Pagenaud, Power and the terrific Helio Castroneves make Team Penske the one to beat.

The Smart Bet To Win The Indy 500: Josef Newgarden +1200

Newgarden almost held Hinchcliffe for the pole this week. Newgarden finished at an average lap speed of 270.70 while Hinchcliffe finished at an average lap speed of 270.76. Newgarden finished in the Top 10 in the Indianapolis 500 in 2015 at 9th place. He started 9th and finished 9th. He’s the only driver along with Ed Carpenter who drives for Ed Carpenter Racing. A top 2 start could lead to a surprise finish for Newgarden in 2016.

The Longshot Bet To Win The Indy 500: Ryan Hunter-Reay +2000

Ryan Hunter-Reay provided an amazing effort this week. He almost grabbed second place from Newgarden but fell short. Hunter-Reay starts at position 3. He won the Indianapolis 500 in 2014. He finished 9th after starting 15th at the Grand Prix of Indianapolis on May 14. I think at 20 to 1 odds, you have to take a long look at Hunter-Reay to upset the favorites on May 29.
