NBA Free Picks Jan 22 – 28

My NBA free picks for this week don’t tip-off until Thursday, Jan. 25 when the Minnesota Timberwolves head to Oakland to battle the defending champion Golden State Warriors. Do the T’Wolves have any shot versus the Warriors?

Saturday’s marquee game is a battle between Eastern Conference powerhouse Boston and Golden State. Is Boston ready to hang with Kevin Durant, Steph Curry, and the rest of the best team in the NBA?

The final game I like is between Philadelphia and Oklahoma City. Who wins when young Ben Simmons leads the 76’ers into Russell country?

NBA Free Picks For The Week Of Jan 22 – 28

Minnesota at Golden State
When:  Thursday, Jan. 25 at 10:30 pm ET
Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, CA
TV: TNT

Analysis: Minnesota’s got about a 2-game lead over the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Northwest Division. The T’Wolves average 108.6 points per game. That ranks sixth in the NBA. Minnesota also shoots 47.6% from the field. That ranks fifth in the NBA.

Based on those stats, it sure appears as if Minnesota could hang with the Golden State Warriors. That’s probably not going to happen. Minnesota plays basketball the way Golden State want its opponents to play basketball.

The Warriors rank first in the NBA in field goal percentage allowed. Golden State’s entire philosophy is to force you to try and score with them. That leads to you invariably taking bad shots, which Minnesota did the last time these two teams played.

The Warriors dominated the T’Wolves 125 to 101 in early November. A similar final score could happen on Thursday.

Pick: Golden State

Boston at Golden State
When:  Saturday, Jan. 27 at 8:30 pm ET
Where: Oracle Arena, Oakland, CA
TV: ABC

Analysis: On Saturday, Golden State hosts the Boston Celtics. Boston is one of the better teams in the Eastern Conference. Because Cleveland is having so much trouble, Boston might be the best team in the Eastern Conference.

This will be the second time the Boston Celtics battle the Golden State Warriors. In the first battle, on Nov. 16 last year, Boston beat the Warriors 92 to 88. The Celtics forced the Warriors to play their game.

It’s going to be tough for Boston to repeat the great straight up win this Saturday on Jan. 27. Boston is good enough to keep this game within the likely spread number, though. I believe Boston could be a great pick ATS while Golden State exacts revenge on the money line.

Pick: Boston

Philadelphia at Oklahoma City
When:  Sunday, Jan. 28 at 6:00 pm ET
Where: Toyota Center, Houston, TX
TV: ESPN

Analysis: ESPN’s nationally broadcast game this Sunday on Jan. 28 is Philadelphia at Oklahoma City. The 76’ers are led by Ben Simmons. Simmons might be the best player to enter the NBA since LeBron way back in the early 2000’s. He averages 16 points, over 8 boards, close to 2 steals, 1 block, and over 7 assists per game.

Simmons can flat out play basketball. The 76’ers battled the Thunder this past December 15. In that game, Philly pushed OKC to overtime where the Thunder beat the 76’ers 119 to 117. Because Philly matches up with the Oklahoma City Thunder, this is another game where the money line winner could be different from the ATS winner.

Philly’s the play against the spread.

Pick: Philadelphia
