Why Bet The Memphis Grizzlies Odds at +9
There’s a good reason to back the Grizzlies in this Game 1 matchup and it’s because Memphis won two of their four regular season meetings against the Spurs as previously mentioned.
Not only that, but the Grizz have a phenomenal defense that finished third in the league in points allowed (100.0 ppg) and still have a trio of very quality veteran players in Mike Conley (20.6 ppg), Marc Gasol (19.6 ppg) and Zach Randolph (14.1 ppg, 8.2 rpg).
Unfortunately, the Grizzlies dropped five of their final six regular season games and seven of 10 overall while losing to the Spurs twice during the season-ending stretch.
Memphis’ uninspiring losses to lowly Sacramento, the L.A. Lakers and Pistons during that span tell me they’re going to be in trouble against a San Antonio team that is much better at the offensive end of the floor and statistically better defensively as well.
Why Bet The San Antonio Spurs Odds at -9
MVP contender Kawhi Leonard (25.7 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.8 spg) and the second-seeded San Antonio Spurs posted a blistering 10-4 mark over their last 13 games while beating the Grizzlies twice along the way in addition to Cleveland and Oklahoma City, so I wouldn’t put too much stock in their two previous losses to Memphis this season.
Led by Leonard the Spurs rank a respectable 13th in scoring (105.4 ppg) while also finishing the regular season ranked a stellar second in points allowed (98.1 ppg). In addition to their superstar small forward, the Spurs also have three other players that average double figures in veterans LaMarcus Aldridge (17.3 ppg), Pau Gasol (12.4 ppg) and Tony Parker (10.1 ppg).
Memphis vs San Antonio Expert Pick & Final Score Prediction
The Spurs and Grizzlies split the regular season series 2-2 with both teams winning their two home contests. While I like the Spurs to get the series-opening win at home in this contest, I just don’t see them beating Memphis by the 10 points it would take for them to cover the spread.
San Antonio has gone 1-4 ATS in their last five home games and 1-7 ATS in their last eight home games against a team with a losing road record while Memphis has gone 4-0 ATS against the Spurs over the last four meetings. The Grizzlies find a way to narrowly cover in a close defeat.
My final score prediction is San Antonio 99 Memphis 94
