A Closer Look At My NBA Playoff First Round Game 3 Free Picks
(3) Oklahoma City at (6) Dallas
When: Thursday, April 21 at 7:00pm ET
If I’m Billy Donovan, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, I might be slightly worried, but I’m not panicking yet. Dallas pulled off a terrific 85 to 84 upset over the Thunder in Game 2 of the series. But that doesn’t mean that Dallas is automatically the winner of the series.
Oklahoma City shot 33.7% from the field when making 31 of 92 shots. They shot 21.9% from three. Even with the bad percentages, the Thunder still had a chance to win the game at the end. I expect Russell and Kevin to come up huge on Thursday night. They can blow out Dallas in this game.
Pick: Oklahoma City
(2) Toronto at (7) Indiana
When: Thursday, April 21 at 7:30 pm ET
TV: NBA Television
After a lackluster 90 to 100 loss at home in Game 1, the Raptors turned it around with a sterling 98 to 87 win in Game 2. But, Toronto took 10 more shots than Indiana in that matchup. The Indiana defense, even in Game 2, held Toronto to 43% from the field and 27.8% from three.
The extra 10 shots accounted for the margin of victory. I think that Indiana makes adjustments in Game 3 to lower the difference in number of shots. The Pacers still have the type of defense that can really give Toronto issues. I like Indiana to bounce back with a win in Game 3.
(1) Cleveland at (8) Detroit
When: Friday, April 22 at 7:00 pm ET
Cleveland only beat Detroit by 5 points, 106 to 101, in Game 1. This was after losing to the Piston 110 to 112 on April 13. Detroit matches up very well with Cleveland. It’s going to be interesting to see what adjustments Tyronn Lue makes in order for the Cavaliers to keep Andre Drummond from dominating in the rebound department.
I’m not sure if there is an answer. Timofey Mozgov has been ridiculously bad this season. Kevin Love was great in Game 1 with 28 points and 13 boards. Can Love make it 3 terrific games in a row? I’m not so sure that he can. I like Detroit to win Game 3.
(2) San Antonio at (7) Memphis
When: Friday, April 22 at 9:30 pm ET
San Antonio has blown out Memphis in 2 straight games. As a -17 point favorite in Game 1, the Spurs dominated Memphis 106 to 74. As a -17.5 point favorite in Game 2, San Antonio blitzed the Grizzlies 98 to 64.
San Antonio goes into Friday’s Game 3 as a -11.5 point road favorite. The Spurs went 21 and 20 in away games this season. 11.5 points might seem like a lot, but not in this matchup. The Spurs are just too good for Memphis to deal with. I like San Antonio to once again blowout the Grizzlies.
Pick: San Antonio
