Sometimes it’s fun to bet on certain big name teams, but it can be just as enjoyable to find a handful of NBA teams to bet against. Maybe you don’t like their best player, or have lost money on them in the past. Why not makes some scratch off the misery of others? These are four teams where I’m going the other way in almost every game they have this coming week.
Denver Nuggets (24-25 SU and 22-27 ATS)
The Nuggets have completely fallen apart with injuries and bad personnel management this season. At just 2-4 SU and 1-5 ATS in the past two weeks it’s become apparent that their high scoring attack isn’t enough to make them a competent commodity on the hardwood. It’s certainly not for a lack of effort, but Denver is also a boring-as-hell team overall. There’s nothing to like here, especially with two road games against two tough teams this week. Denver has always had some low ball appeal to NBA bettors, but they are easily one of the NBA teams to bet against this week.
Upcoming Games: @ Indiana (2/10), @ Minnesota (2/14)
Memphis Grizzlies (27-23 SU and 23-26-1 ATS)
I have done a complete 180 on the Grizzlies. Last year, I even bet on them to win the Western Conference Championship. But that also taught me a harsh lesson because I think we’ve seen the ceiling of these Grizzlies and it isn’t as high as we want it to be. The return of Marc Gasol was supposed to spark some intrigue, but it’s just turned them in to even more of a disaster because the oddsmakers are piping the line a little harder. Memphis is a porous 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall, are one of the worst home teams there is in terms of betting (10-17 ATS) and play some matchups where they won’t have much value because of a wonky back-to-back, home-and-away pair of games this week. Stay away.
Upcoming Games: vs. Washington (2/11), @ Orlando (2/12)
San Antonio Spurs (37-14 SU and 24-27 ATS)
Gamblers are usually tepid around the Spurs to begin with because of their inconsistency. But you also never know when they’re going to pick up the slack and dominate on the court. The reason they’re one of the NBA teams to bet against for the next two weeks is because of their horrific travel schedule. San Antonio’s last home game was a 95-93 win over Sacramento on February 1st. They don’t play at home again until February 26th, and right now they’re stuck in the middle of a nine-game road trip where they’ve gone just 2-2 ATS. The competition they’re facing over this week isn’t that good, but that just means that Pop is more likely to rest the core of his team. That leaves a window of opportunity wide open for the Pistons and Celtics this week as San Antonio prepares for a rough schedule next week with the Clippers, Blazers and Suns all on the docket.
Upcoming Games: @ Detroit (2/10), @ Boston (2/12)
Philadelphia 76ers (15-37 SU and 20-32 ATS)
I don’t actually like picking on low hanging fruit like the Sixers, but when we’re talking about the NBA teams to bet against this week, I can’t leave them off the list. The Sixers were just eviscerated by both teams from Los Angeles in back-to-back games, have a completely awful 2-8 ATS record in their last 10 games overall and hit the road against a pair of pretty decent home teams in Golden State and Utah. I like what Philadelphia is doing long term, but I hate them in the interim which is why they round out the four NBA teams to bet against this week.
Upcoming Games: @ Golden State (2/10), @ Utah (2/12)
