The Spurs and Heat highlight TNT’s Thursday Night Basketball doubleheader, and I’m here to dish out my expert picks on the midweek festivities. Also in action are the Thunder and Suns, and I prefer Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook in what could actually be the best game of the night. Check the book the day of for game lines.
Let me just start this TNT Thursday Night Basketball picks by saying that this matchup means more to us than it does to either of the teams involved. The last time these two played over a month ago, the Heat locked in a 113-101 win in the first rematch of the last NBA Finals. This is the second and final time these two will meet…and once again I’m not sure if San Antonio cares.
Gregg Popovich has always had a long term way of thinking, and one game isn’t going to make or break his Spurs. They understand that the outcome of the game only really effects the win/loss column. I could spin a heavy amount of hyperbole about this game for the purpose of making my NBA expert picks, but that would belie the truth.
San Antonio remains one of the must infuriating bets in the whole league. At 5-1 SU since the break, they’re also just 3-3 ATS. There was a time in the first half of the season that they had some appeal, but those days seem long gone. The Spurs will cruise to expected victories, fight when it matters and just try to get enough wins to stay in the top-3 of the Western Conference. This TNT Thursday Night basketball doubleheader is more for the fans than it is for the Spurs.
Part of the reason that San Antonio gets away with that sort of behavior is because they’ve not only earned it; they have to play that way considering their overall age. Miami shouldn’t have much to prove as two-time defending champions either, but they’re also watching LeBron take over the second half of the season.
The main problem for Miami in this one is that it’s part of a three game road trip that includes Houston and Chicago. And while the Spurs are a team, the Heat have reverted in to a one-man army behind LeBron James. Is that enough for me to bet against Miami? No. I still truly believe that this game will mean more to Miami than it will to San Antonio, and they’ll have to stay in top form through this pivotal three game stretch. That’s why I like Miami and LeBron to notch the win over San Antonio, who will probably roll over in the final quarter…much toe everyone’s chagrin.
Hopefully the Spurs can save everything they have for another thrilling Finals.

The Lakers have plenty of value in the sportsbook as an underdog cover team, but it’s impossible to side with them in my TNT Thursday night basketball doubleheader expert picks. Pau Gasol and Kendall Marshall are coming off an impressive 107-106 victory over Portland, brining the Lakers to a strong 4-3 ATS record since the break but a matchup with the Clippers never goes well for these guys.
The last time these two met, things got ugly as Blake Griffin slammed and jammed his way to a 33-point night during a 123-87 stomping. And the Clippers did that without Chris Paul. With CP3 back, the Clippers have been humming like a offensive death machine, going 4-0 SU and ATS in their last 4 games with semi-excusable losses against San Antonio and Memphis coming out of the break. Those two teams are matchup nightmares for the Clippers. These Lakers? Not so much.
