Is it too early to think about the 2017 NBA Championship? Not really. Soon, the 2016 NBA Champion will be crowned. That team, no doubt, will automatically go off at lower odds than what’s listed on this article. If basketball handicappers have a strong opinion as to which team will win the title in 2017, they should jump on the team that they like soon. Click here to see the latest NBA odds & analysis.
A Closer Look At The Very Early 2017 NBA Championship Odds
As to be expected, Golden State is the favorite at 3/2. The Warriors should be able to keep their top players while possibly making a play for Oklahoma City star Kevin Durant. No wonder they’re at 3/2 to win the NBA Championship in 2017.
At 5/2, the Cleveland Cavaliers have to be considered a top pick. The trio of LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love only figure to be better in 2016-2017 than it was in 2015-2016. Not only that, but Cleveland now appears to have a viable bench and if the NBA Playoffs are any indication, Tyronn Lue as the head coach instead of David Blatt was the right move for the organization.
San Antonio at 6/1 and Oklahoma City at 8/1 are both excellent wagers given the odds. The Spurs are likely to get better since this will be the second season where LaMarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard are the go to guys. Aldridge spent most of the season figuring out what his role was in San Antonio. Aldridge and Leonard could become the next Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.
Oklahoma City has the current Durant and Westbrook. Betting on Oklahoma City is more of a risk because Durant may or may not resign with the Thunder. If he does, forget it. The team could be the squad to beat in 2017. Coach Billy Donovan will continue to get his players to believe in his defensive first system. That’s the way to win in the NBA, by being a defense first team.
The Clippers at 16/1, Boston at 20/1, Toronto and Miami at 25/1 and Chicago and Atlanta both at 40/1, are sort of in the same boat to win the title in 2017. After Oklahoma City, there is a huge drop off. The Clippers in particular have shown the inability to win the title even though they have a very good regular season squad. Unless any of those teams improve significantly during the off-season, it’s difficult to see them breaking the Cleveland, Golden State, San Antonio and Oklahoma City group of 4 who have a real shot of winning the NBA Championship.
Any team at 60 to 1 odds or higher to win the 2017 NBA Championship is a roll of the dice. If you want to take a flyer, the best team on which to take that flyer might be the Indiana Pacers at 100 to 1. The Pacers figure to keep Paul George even though the rumor is that the Lakers are going to try and make a play for him.
Phoenix at 300 to 1 and Brooklyn at 500 to 1 are right where they need to be. Truth be told, Phoenix might be the team that should be 500 to 1.
