2016 March Madness Sweet 16 Parlay Picks

The Sweet 16 is set with the usual participants showing up. North Carolina, Virginia and Duke are all in the Sweet 16 this season. So is Kansas and Maryland.

A couple of surprise teams in Gonzaga and Syracuse battle it out on Friday in the Sweet 16. Some felt that Syracuse wasn’t supposed to make it to the Big Dance. Not only have the Orange made it to the Big Dance, but they’ve won 2 straight games. I like one of the teams in that game for my 3 team parlay. Don’t forget to keep reading for a 5-Team Bonus Parlay for the Sweet 16.

Listen: Iowa State vs Virginia

The Iowa State Cyclones have been impressive in 2 games in the NCAA Tournament. Iowa State out ran Iona for a 94 to 81 win in the Round of 64. In the Round of 32, Iowa State battled Arkansas-Little Rock, a double-overtime winner versus Purdue in the Round of 64, into submission via a 78 to 61 score.

But Iowa State faces one of the top teams in the nation on Friday. The Cyclones battle a Virginia squad that has been almost more impressive than Iowa State has been. Virginia dominated Hampton 81 to 45. Butler wanted to run and Virginia acquiesced. The Cavaliers beat Butler 77 to 69. Virginia’s defense is as solid as it gets. It’s difficult to see Iowa State keeping this game close on Sunday.

Pick: Virginia

Listen: Maryland vs Kansas

Rock Chalk Jayhawk is the chant that has gone up during this tournament. No team has looked as solid as Kansas. The Jayhawks covered versus a tough UConn squad in the Round of 32 via a 73 to 61 win.

But, Kansas may have been sliding by against inferior teams in the Big 12. Now, the Jayhawks take on one of the more solid squads in the nation, the Maryland Terrapins. The Terps beat Hawaii 73 to 60 as a -7.5 point favorite even though they shot 1 out of 18 from three. That’s incredible. What Maryland did was lock the Rainbow Warriors down via suffocating defense.

Maryland held Hawaii to 32% from the field. The Terps held the Warriors to 21% from three. Maryland’s starting guards, Rasheed Sulaimon and Melo Trimble, and forward Jake Layman are too good from three to go 1 for 18 again. I think Maryland pulls off the moneyline upset as well as covering the spread versus Kansas on Thursday.

Pick: Maryland

Listen: Gonzaga vs Syracuse

So…did you have Gonzaga playing Syracuse in the Sweet 16 in your bracket?  What a mess, right? It all started with Middle Tennessee State upsetting Michigan State in the Round of 64. Unfortunately, the Blue Raiders couldn’t keep it going. Syracuse trounced the Blue Raiders 75 to 50. Now, the Orange turns its attention to Gonzaga.

A pre-season Top 10 team, Gonzaga was supposed to lose in the first round to Seton Hall. The Pirates had won the Big East Tournament over Xavier and Villanova. What happened is that the Hall ended up getting blasted by the Zags in the Round of 64. In the Round of 32, Gonzaga took down tough Utah 82 to 59.

I don’t believe that Syracuse has played a team during the NCAA Tournament that’s even close to being as good as Gonzaga. The Zags’ defense has been unreal in this tournament. Plus, Kyle Wiltjer is finally getting help from the rest of the starting 5. Gonzaga wins and moves on.

Pick: Gonzaga
